Quemell Brave Earns 2nd All-Big South Award During Final Day of the 2016 Outdoor Track & Field Championships

LYNCHBURG, VA
—The Winthrop men's team finished fifth while the women tied for sixth place in the final standings of the 2016 Big South Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships which wrapped up Thursday afternoon at the Matthes-Hopkins Complex at Liberty University.
 
The host Liberty Flames captured both the men's and women's team titles while Coastal Carolina placed second in both as it was making its final appearance in the meet.
 
Coach Ben Paxton's Eagle men compiled 61 points while the women compiled 48.50 points to tie Gardner-Webb
 
Sophomore Quemell Brave's performance in the high jump was the highlight of the final day of competition for the Eagles. He became a double award winner as he finished second in the high jump with a leap of 2.01 meters.  He also placed third in the long jump event on Wednesday to earn All-Big South Conference honors.
 
Sophomore Kevin Mills, who captured the 3,000 meter steeplechase on Wednesday, nearly earned another All-BSC honor in the 5,000 meter run, but fell just short as he finished fourth with a time of 14:52.92.  Freshman sprinter Malachi Young also had a fourth place finish in the men's 400 meter dash with a time of 48.82 seconds, and the men's 4x400 meter relay team also claimed a fourth place finish with a time of 3:16.56.  Members of the relay team are Young, Render Hill, Aaron Jones, and Dylan Brennand-McClement.
 
Other notable performances on the final day were turned in by men's hurdler senior Will England, who finished 7th in the 400 meter hurdles (59.57 sec.), Sophomore Emily Sparrow came in fifth in the 10,000 meter run as he had a time of 38:23.58. Senior Tristan Langley followed up her second place finish in Wednesday's steeplechase with a seventh place finish in the 5,000 meter run as he was clocked in 18:21.22. 
 
Junior All-American Marthaline Cooper and Brave have qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary in Jacksonville, FL, May 26-28.
