The Eagles fall to 22-14 on the year and 3-8 in conference action while the Highlanders continue a twelve-game winning streak, improving to 23-11 and 10-1 in the Big South.
Matt Crohan took his first conference loss of the year, surrendering six runs on three hits in four innings. Dylan Nelson earned the win, allowing two runs on six hits.
Tyler Asbill went 2-5 at the plate with three RBI.
Radford jumped out to a quick lead, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning with three runs coming off a bases loaded double by Hunter Higgerson.
Winthrop cut the lead in half, scoring two runs in the second inning. Three straight singles by
John Menken,
Brad Kaczka and
Mark Lowrie loaded the bases and Menken and Kaczka came home on a single to right field by Asbill.
Radford scored one run in the next four innings and held the Eagles to just three hits. Â Â
The Highlanders tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the seventh. Brad Keen led off the inning doubling and advanced to third as Chris Coia grounded out. Josh Gardiner was hit by a pitch and stole second before a wild pitch scored Keen and moved Gardiner to third. Aaron Scoville walked and advanced to third on a single that brought home Gardiner. Scoville crossed the plate on sacrifice fly to left field by Patrick Marshall to bring the score to 11-2.
Babe Thomas scored in the eighth as Asbill reached on fielder's choice after singling and advancing to third on a double by
Clay Altman but Radford answered back with a two-run half inning of its own.
Winthrop rallied to score three more runs in the top of the ninth inning.
Anthony Paulsen led off with a single and advanced to third on a double by
Roger Gonzalez. Paulsen crossed the plate on a double by
Jake Sullivan before Gonzalez scored from third as
Chad Smith grounded out. Sullivan came home on a single to right field by
Clay Altman to round out scoring for the Eagles.
The series will conclude on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in Radford.
