Box Score Box Scorewww.winthropphotos.comConway, SC- Coastal Carolina scored eight runs in the bottom of the first inning and the Winthrop baseball team couldn't overcome the deficit as it fell to the Chanticleers 19-4 on Friday night.
Winthrop drops to 17-9 this season and 1-3 in conference action while Coastal Carolina improves to 19-6 while remaining undefeated in the Big South with a 4-0 record.
Starter
Sam Kmiec took the loss for the Eagles, surrendering eight runs on six hits in 2/3 of an inning. Four other Winthrop pitcher combined to allow 11 runs on 13 hits led by
Carson Gregory who held The Chanticleers to just one hit in three innings. Coastal Carolina's Alex Cunningham earned the win, pitching five innings and allowing four runs on six hits.
Freshman
Mitch Spires went 2-3 with an RBI and scored a run.
The Eagles took a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, capitalizing on two errors. With one out,
Babe Thomas singled and advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt by Cunningham.
Anthony Paulsen walked before both runners scored as
Roger Gonzalez reached on a fielding error by the left fielder.
 The Chanticleers took the lead after four runs scored on home runs by Michael Paez and Zach Remillard. Casey Schroeder then walked and advanced to second after David Parrett was hit by a pitch. Schroeder scored and Parrett advanced to third on a double down the right field line by Tyler Chadwick. Al Molina drove home both runners on a triple to right center before crossing the plate on a single by Paez.
Winthrop kept fighting and scored a run in the second and third innings. Spires led off the second inning walking and advancing to third on a double by
Kyle Edwards before scoring on a sacrifice fly by
Tyler Asbill.
Spires singled to right field to bring home
Mark Lowrie who had singled and advanced to third on a double down the left field by
Brad Kaczka to bring the score to 8-4 heading into the bottom of the third.
Coastal Carolina locked up the game by scoring one run in the third inning and two runs in both the fourth and fifth inning. After being held to just one hit in the sixth and seventh innings, The Chanticleers tacked on six more runs in the eighth inning to bring the final to 19-4.
