ROCK HILL, SC- Senior
Brad Kaczka hit a school record-breaking three triples to drive home five runs in the Winthrop baseball team's 11-4 victory over The Citadel on Tuesday night.
Kazcka's three triples were the most in a single game by any Winthrop player and ties the NCAA record. The last player to set this record was Albany's Brad Daniels in 2006.
Winthrop improves to 16-8 on the year while the Bulldogs drop to 14-9.
"I've just been staying with my approach every time I come to bat," says Kaczka. "I try to relax between each pitch, not worry about what's going on around me and hit the ball where it's pitched to."
Josh Strong earned his third win of the year, giving up one run on three hits in 3.2 inning. Five other Winthrop pitchers combined to allow three runs on four hits. The Citadel's starter Austin Mason took his first loss of the year, surrendering five runs on seven hits.
Tyler Asbill led off by reaching on a fielding error by the second baseman and advanced to second on a single by
Babe Thomas.
Anthony Paulsen doubled to center field to score Asbill and move Thomas to third. Thomas scored on a groundout by
Mark Lowrie and Paulsen scored from third on a single by
Roger Gonzalez. Kaczka tripled to drive home Gonzalez before crossing the plate on a bunt by
Mitch Spires to bring the score to 5-0.
Jace Whitley tacked on one more run in the third inning, coming home on a double by
Kyle Edwards after singling through the left side and stealing second.
The Bulldogs got one run back in the third inning when Connor Walsh scored after Bret Hines was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Â
The Eagles pushed the advantage to 9-1 in the fourth inning as Kaczka hit a bases loaded triple into the right field corner to score Whitley, Gonzalez and Paulsen. Â
The Citadel rallied to score three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Three straight singles by Jason Smith, Jacob Watcher and Austin Mapes loaded the bases and Smith scored on a groundout by Walsh. Watcher came home on a wild pitch that advanced Mapes to third and Mapes crossed the plate as Drew Ellis reached on a fielding error by Paulsen.
Kazcka's final triple went down the right field line and brought home Whitley who had singled to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning. Kazcka scored the Eagles' final run as Spires grounded out to the shortstop. Â
The Eagles have less than 24 hours to recover as they take on USC Upstate on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. at The Winthrop Ballpark.
