Winthrop Student-Athletes Honored During Annual Athletic Awards Banquet

2013-14 Team MVPs Are Named At Athletic Awards Banquet

Twenty-five Receive Endowment Awards, while 20 Are Named MVPs, and 50 Seniors Are Recognized

ROCK HILL, SC– Twenty-five Winthrop University student-athletes received special awards on behalf of the athletic scholarship endowment program, 20 were recognized as Most Valuable Performers of their respective teams, and 50 seniors were honored during the annual Athletic Awards Banquet held Sunday night, May 4, in McBryde Hall.
           
The names of the special endowed scholarship awards and each recipient are as follows:
 
The Roman Gabriel, Sr. Endowment Award- Alyssa Blevins, lacrosse
            The Roman Gabriel, Sr., endowed scholarship is made possible by Roman Gabriel in honor of his late father.  This award is presented to a student-athlete whose demonstrated commitment to athletics and academics best exemplifies the concept of "student-athlete".
 
The Rocky Morris Award– Reid Langdale, baseball
            This award is provided by Jack Lindsay in honor of the grandmother of Rocky, Mrs. Pauline Lindsay and goes to the basketball or baseball player who displayed loyalty, character and an appreciative attitude.
 
The John T. Roddy Award- Yuta Hirokawa, men's tennis
            This award is provided in honor of John T. Roddy, who served as a trustee for 36 years in South Carolina.
 
The Robert H. Breakfield Award- Sharrone Honor, women's track, and Carlo Raiteri, men's track
            This award is provided by Winthrop School of Business professor Robert Breakfield and his wife Gay Randolph and goes to two cross country/ track athletes who demonstrate leadership, sportsmanship, and academic integrity.
 
The William Gordon Clarkson Award- Jennifer Dilger, women's golf
            This award was endowed by Matt Hires and is presented to an outstanding member of the golf team.
 
The Griffin-Guettler Award- Peter Nagovnak, men's tennis, Zoe Vernon, women's basketball, and Hannah Hadaway, women's track and field
            This award endowed by Larry and Kathy Bigham on behalf of the late Dr. Mary Roland Griffin and Dr. Ed Guettler, two of Winthrop's most distinguished retired faculty members, is presented to the male and female athletes with the highest grade point averages.
 
Rock Hill Coca-Cola Award- Jordi Lluch, men's soccer, and Tiffany Charles, women's basketball
            This award is made possible by Fred Faircloth and goes to the male and female athlete who demonstrate talent, integrity, and spirit.
 
Dr. Robert M. Scoville and Dr. William E. Gregory, Jr. Award- Magnus Thorsson, men's soccer, and Anna Sammons, women's soccer
            This award is given by Drs. Robert Scoville and William Gregory to two athletes who are supportive, positive, and consistent team leaders.
           
            
The Patrick Endowment- McKenzi Corn, softball
            This award is given by the late Wayne Patrick and Lib Patrick to a senior male or female student-athlete who has exhibited outstanding leadership qualities.
The Businessmen's Association of York County Award- Hjordis Eiriksdottir, volleyball

The Ann Scott Terry Award- Samiya Wright, women's basketball
            This award is made possible by an endowment from Ann and Vernon Terry and is presented to a women's basketball player with at least a 2.75 grade point average.
 
The Wiley Blanton Award- Grace Radler, women's soccer
            This award is given to a business major with at least a 3.5 grade point average.
           
The Bob Hyman Memorial Scholarship Award- Nick Eberhardt, men's golf
            This award is given in memory of Bob Hyman, a loyal Eagle fan and supporter, to a Winthrop student-athlete from South Carolina who has achieved a 3.0 grade point average or above.
 
The Ken Staton Endowment Award- Jeanne Stroud, women's cross country, indoor and outdoor track   
            This award is given to a student-athlete who goes above and beyond the call of duty on the playing field, in the classroom and in the community.
 
The De'Andre Adams Memorial Award- Joab Jerome, men's basketball
            This award goes to a student-athlete who best exemplifies athletic passion and pride.
 
The Kenzie Flood Baseball Award-TJ Olesczuk, baseball
            This award is designated for a baseball upperclassman with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
 
The Vernon Wade Terry Award- Derrick Henry, men's basketball
            This award is presented to a men's basketball player with at least a 2.75 grade point average.
 
The John Newcomb Endowment Award-Andressa Garcia, women's tennis
            This award is given in memory of John Newcomb, a four-year scholarship student-athlete on the men's tennis team, and is presented to a member of the tennis team with a least a 2.5 grade point average.
 
The Vernon and Ann Terry Award- Melanie Andrea, softball
            This award is designated for a softball student-athlete who displays leadership on the softball team and within the Winthrop community.
 
The Susan Anfin and Jim Doyle Award-Tevin Prescott, men's basketball
            This award is designated for a men's basketball student-athlete who has demonstrated exemplary grade point average improvement.
The Horace Turbeville Award- Leighton Daniels, baseball
            This award is presented to a baseball player in memory of Horace Turbeville, Winthrop's first baseball coach
           
Also presented was the Senior Academic Award that goes to the male and female athlete with the highest grade point average among all senior athletes.  This year's recipients are Adriano Negri, men's soccer, and Hannah Hadaway, women's track and field
