ROCK HILL, S.C. – 75.7 percent of Winthrop student-athletes earned Presidential Honor Roll recognition for the 2020-21 academic year, leading all Big South schools for the first time since 2011-12, announced Tuesday afternoon.
 
Winthrop was 1-of-4 Big South institutions to have at least 70 percent of its eligible students honored, with 190 of its 251 student-athletes meeting the threshold, a university-high.

"I am so proud of our athletes and how they have persevered and excelled through such unique and challenging circumstances. This is a testament to their hard work and dedication not just on the field, but in the classroom," said Interim AD Hank Harrawood. "It is also an indication of what a terrific job Claire Mooney-Melvin does in support of our student-athletes and their academic pursuits."
 
To be named to the Presidential Honor Roll, student-athletes must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or better for the academic year. 
 
Additionally, the conference honored 20 Winthrop student-athletes with the Big South Commissioner's Award, given to student-athletes with a perfect 4.0 GPA.
 
"Our athletes continue to impress me with their success in the classroom even during one of the most challenging years," said Director of Academic Services, Claire Mooney-Melvin. "They have taken everything in stride and continued to work hard in the classroom.  I am so proud of all our athletes for a great year."
