ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop student-athletes posted the highest departmental cumulative GPA and spring term GPA ever, the athletics department announced Tuesday.
Winthrop's nearly 300 student-athletes earned a cumulative 3.29 GPA for the 2019-20 academic year and a 3.57 GPA for the spring 2020 term.
"I am incredibly proud of our student-athletes and their perseverance during this semester. Our students faced challenges including seasons being cut short and having to learn remotely,"
Claire Mooney-Melvin, Director of Academic and Student Services, said. "Their unwavering dedication to their academics produced record setting results."
For the spring semester, 87 percent of Winthrop student-athletes earned a 3.0 or higher, with 68 students earning a perfect 4.0 GPA. All 16 teams earned higher than a 3.0 GPA.
The Eagles also had several individuals claim academic honors during the year:
Harper Henson – Women's Indoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year
Jeremy Falwell – Men's Outdoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year
Zak Butt – Men's Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Big South's Christenberry Award, CoSida Academic All-District
Sara McGuire- Woman of Distinction Award
45 senior student-athletes graduated in the spring 2020 class.
