Aramburu, Carvalho and Portiolli Take Home Top Awards At Big South Tennis Banquet

2013 Big South Freshman of the Year Ivar Aramburu
ROCK HILL, SC--Winthrop's Ivar Aramburu captured Freshman of the Year honors for the men while women's veteran head coach Cid Carvalho was voted Coach of the Year and senior Giovanna Portiolli was named the Scholar-Athlete of the Year as the 2013 Big South Conference men's and women's tennis awards were presented during Wednesday night's awards ceremony.

Winthrop is hosting the 2013 Big South Championships that began on Wednesday and will conclude on Saturday at Memorial Courts.

Aramburu (Pueblo, Mexico) was honored as the league's top freshman after compiling an 8-4 overall singles mark and a 6-2 slate against conference opponents.  His notable wins include defeating last year's Freshman of the Year Adrien Rossingnon and the 2012 Big South Player of the Year Nicholas Sayer.  He earned the April 9 Big South Freshman of the Week award and tabbed six-first place votes (12 points) for the Freshman of the Year honor.

Carvalho led his squad to a 15-9 overall record and perfect 9-0 conference mark and the 2013 regular season championship.  This year marks the ninth time that he has been Coach of the Year.  He has coached the Eagles to 16 regular-season championship titles and 14 NCAA tournament appearances.  Carvalho earned six first-place votes and 12 points for the Coach of the Year honor, finishing ahead of Charleston Southern head coach Mike Baker (six points).

Portiolli, a environmental science major and chemistry minor with a 3.96 GPA, is a three-time Big South Presidential Honor Roll member.  She finished Big South play with a 9-0 record, and is a two-time No. 4 singles Flight Champion.  Overall, she is 9-1 at the No. 3 spot and 6-5 at the No. 4 position.

Sophomore Dylan Comerford (Johannesburg, S. Africa) was named to the men's All-Academic Team.

Also announced Wednesday evening were the All-Academic Team, the Men's Flight Winners and the All-Conference Singles and Doubles Award winners.
