Baseball Blanked On The Road By No. 10 North Carolina 2-0

Eagles Will Travel To Charleston Southern This Weekend For Three-Game Series

CHAPEL HILL, NC –
The Winthrop baseball team was held to four hits on Wednesday evening, while Colin Moran drove in both North Carolina runs as the tenth-ranked Tar Heels defeated the Eagles 2-0 at Boshamer Stadium in non-conference action.

Winthrop falls to 13-30 on the season, while North Carolina improves to 31-13 overall.

Hobbs Johnson (3-1) earned the win tossing 4.0 scoreless innings and allowed two hits, no walks and six strikeouts. Preston Johnson (1-7) took the loss allowing one run on one hit, two walks and no strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work.

Moran put the Tar Heels ahead 1-0 in the first inning on his RBI single to left field, which scored Chaz Frank from third base. Frank led off the bottom of the first for North Carolina with a walk and moved to third on a stolen base and throwing error by Johnson on a failed pickoff attempt. Moran then extended the Tar Heels lead to 2-0 in the sixth inning with a leadoff solo home run to right field against Eagle reliever Mitchell Knox. It was his third home run of the season.

Justin Hopper, TJ Olesczuk, Chas Crane and Patrick McLendon had one hit each for Winthrop in the contest, while Moran posted a team-high two hits and two RBI. 

The Eagles will be back in action on Friday, May 4 as they travel down to North Charleston, SC to face the Charleston Southern Buccaneers in the opener of a three-game conference series. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
