ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop baseball team will hit the road for the second time this week as it travels to Lexington, VA to face the VMI Keydets in a three-game Big South Conference series at Gray-Minor Stadium.
Game times for this weekend's series are 5 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m. on Saturday.
The Eagles enter the three-game weekend series with a 9-21 overall record and 2-4 mark in the conference, while the Keydets are 10-18 on the season and 3-6 in conference play.
Winthrop leads the all-time series over VMI 20-8, which also includes a 7-5 record when playing in Lexington. The Eagles won the first all-time meeting in the series 14-3 in Lexington on Apr. 23, 2004, while the Keydets were victorious in the last meeting 10-2 in Rock Hill on Mar. 20, 2011.
Winthrop's offense is led by
Max Vogel with a .269 average, while
Patrick Gamblin has recorded a team-leading three home runs and 41 total bases.
Matt Lobacz has driven in a team-best 21 RBI on the season.
Tyler Klitsch tops the Eagle pitching staff with a 2.47 ERA in 47.1 innings pitched, while
Matt Pierpont has a team-high three wins and 50.2 innings pitched on the season.
Austin Stuart and
Preston Johnson both have collected two saves.
VMI is led by head coach Marlin Ikenberry, who is currently in his ninth season with the program. George Piccirilli leads the Keydet offense with a .347 average at the plate, while Jacob Morley has a team-leading six home runs and 21 RBI in 111 plate appearances on the season to go with his .342 average and 72 total bases. Coby Cowgill tops the VMI pitching staff with a 4-1 overall record, while John Garrett has a 2.25 ERA in 12 relief appearances and four saves.
