Baseball Returns To Action Tuesday Night At Home Against Wake Forest

Eagles And Demon Deacons Were Rained Out Earlier This Season

The Winthrop baseball team will host the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in its only contest of the week on Tuesday evening at The Winthrop Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.

The Eagles enter the contest 13-28 overall after dropping two out of three last weekend in conference play to Radford, while the Demon Deacons are 25-16 on the season after winning two out of three this past weekend in conference action against Virginia Tech.

Wake Forest leads the all-time series over the Eagles 9-7, but Winthrop leads 5-4 in games played in Rock Hill. The Eagles won the first all-time meeting in the series 11-10 in 1996, while the Demon Deacons walked away with the win in the last meeting between the two teams 9-8 in 11 innings last season in Winston-Salem.

Winthrop is led offensively by TJ Olesczuk with a .287 average at the plate, while Patrick Gamblin has hit a team-high five home runs on the season and Matt Lobacz's 26 RBI lead the team. Tyler Klitsch has a team-best 3.86 ERA on the mound this season to lead the Eagle pitching staff, while Matt Pierpont, Eric Ruth and Austin Stuart have three wins each. Pierpont and Ruth are tied for the team-lead in strikeouts with 61 apiece, and Stuart's .267 opposing average, three saves and 19 relief appearances are tops on the team.

Wake Forest is led by head coach Tom Walter, who is in his third season with the program. The Demon Deacons are led offensively by Conor Keniry with a .343 average, while Mac Williamson has hit 13 home runs on the team and Carlos Lopez provides a team-high 41 RBI and 87 total bases. The Wake Forest pitching staff is led by Brian Holmes with a 6-1 record, 2.54 ERA and .206 opposing average, and Tim Cooney has tossed a team-best 65.2 innings on the season. Michael Dimock has recorded nine saves on the season.
