ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop baseball team will host the Furman Paladins on Wednesday night in its only home game of the week before hitting the road for a three-game conference series at Gardner-Webb.
First pitch between the two teams is set for 6 p.m. The Eagles enter the contest with a 6-19 overall record, while the Paladins are currently 13-12 on the season.
Winthrop leads the all-time series over Furman 18-2, including an 8-1 mark when playing in Rock Hill. The Eagles won the first all-time meeting in the series, which was also the programs first-ever game, 11-5 in Rock Hill on Feb. 28, 1980. The Paladins were victorious in the last meeting between the two teams 4-3 in Greenville on Apr. 12, 2011.
The Winthrop offense is led by
Max Vogel with a .289 average at the plate in 21 games played and 11 starts.
Patrick Gamblin and
Justin Hopper are tied for the team-lead in home runs with two each, while
Matt Lobacz has driven in a team-high 21 RBI.
Tyler Klitsch continues to lead the Eagle pitching staff with a 2.38 ERA in 41.2 innings pitched, which is tied with for the team-lead with
Matt Pierpont. Pierpont and
Eric Ruth have each notched two wins each on the season to lead the team in that category.
Furman is led by head coach Ron Smith, who is currently in his 19
th season with the program. The Paladins are led by offensively by Will Owens with a .381 average in 97 trips to the plate. Will Miller leads the team in both home runs (7) and RBI (26), and is tied for the team-lead with 10 stolen bases. Furman's pitching staff is led by Elliott Waford with a 3.43 ERA in 17 appearances with one start, while Bobby Lyne and Tyler Wood have recorded three wins each on the season.
