ROCK HILL, SC--Tthe Winthrop baseball team has announced its captains for the upcoming 2013 season which begins Feb. 15 against Maryland-Eastern Shore at The Winthrop Ballpark.

Tom Riginos says that the team selected five players to serve as captains. They include seniors
Matt Lobacz,
Matt Pierpont,
Eric Ruth and
Max Vogel, and junior Lieghton Daniels.
Lobacz is a lefthanded hitting first baseman from Acworth, GA who played in all 52 games last season and hit .263 at the plate with a team-high 31 runs batted in. He was also sparkling in the field as he compiled a .992 fielding percentage with only four errors in 492 total chances. This will be his third season in an Eagle uniform after transferring to Winthrop after playing one year at Young Harris College.
Pierpont and Ruth, both righthanded pitchers, are expected tol be in the weekend rotation this spring. Pierpont is a 6-2 product out of Canonsburg, PA who compiled a 4-8 record and a 5.00 earned run average in 2012. He led the Eagles with 93.2 innings pitched and was second in strikeouts with 74.
Ruth, stands 6-0 and is from Hatfield, PA. He had a 3-3 record to go along with a 5.02 ERA and led the staff in strikouts with 75.
Vogel is a lefthanded hitting outfielder from Hopewell, PA who played in 46 games last season with 28 starts. He hit .213. Daniels, a righthanded hitting third baseman from Charlotte, NC, started 43 games last season while batting .205 and compiling a .954 fielding percentage.
