Eagles Bow Out of Big South Baseball Tournament With Extra-Innings Thriller Against Longwood

ROCK HILL, S.C. -- The Winthrop University baseball team fell to Longwood University in a 4-3 loss in 11 innings on Saturday at John H. Moss Stadium. The Eagles recorded 12 hits, including two doubles, but were unable to overcome Longwood's early lead.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

The Lancers took an early lead in the first inning, scoring two runs with a single from Howard and an RBI groundout by Jones. 
In the third inning, Winthrop's Zach Greenberg doubled to right center and Hernandez followed with an RBI single, making it 2-1. 
Longwood extended its lead in the fourth inning as Jones homered to left field, making it 3-1. 
In the eighth inning, Benhardt singled up the middle and later scored on a single by Ethan Wilson, cutting the lead to 3-2. 
The Eagles tied the game in the ninth. Chazz Grossington walked and scored on a single by Benhardt, making it 3-3. 
In the eleventh inning, Longwood scored on a fielding error and a single by Jones, securing the 4-3 victory. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 

Walker Brodt pitched 7.1 innings, striking out six and allowing no walks, marking his career-high in innings pitched. 
Jaylen Hernandez led the Eagles with three hits and one RBI. 
Alan Benhardt contributed two hits, one run, and one RBI. 
The game was decided by a fielding error in the eleventh inning that allowed the Lancers to score the winning run. 
This loss brought the Eagles' overall record to 33-24.
