Rohan Moves Into Third All-Time For Big South In Career Home Runs

Box Score

CHARLESTON, SC –
The Winthrop baseball team dropped a 7-4 midweek decision to The Citadel Bulldogs on Wednesday evening at Riley Park.

The Eagles fall to 21-25 on the season, while the Bulldogs improve to 20-24 overall.

Jeremy Long (4-2) earned the win in relief tossing 2.0 scoreless innings on no hits, no walks and two strikeouts. Wade Newman (0-4) took the loss surrendering six runs on eight hits, one walk and five strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work.

“It was a game of missed opportunities,” said head coach Tom Riginos. “We didn't compete overall or as well as I would like. Our intensity level wasn't where it needed to be, so we have to work on that. We gave ourselves opportunities tonight, but came up short early in the game.”

Winthrop went ahead 1-0 in the top of the first on an RBI double to right field by Matt Lobacz. Eddie Rohan scored on the hit after he reached on a two-out single to left field and advanced to second on a wild pitch by The Citadel starter Bryce Hines.

The Bulldogs tied the contest at 1-1 in the bottom of the first on an RBI groundout by Matt Simonelli, and then took the lead at 2-1 in the second on an RBI groundout by Calvin Orth.

The Eagles made it a 2-2 game in the top of the third inning on a bases loaded walk by Lobacz, but The Citadel would plate four runs in its half of the fifth inning and go ahead of Winthrop 6-2. The inning was highlighted by a one-out three RBI triple to left field by William Ladd, which scored Simonelli, Drew DeKerlegand and Nick Orvin.

The Bulldogs extended their lead to 7-2 in the bottom of the seventh when Simonelli came home on a wild pitch by Winthrop reliever Austin Stuart. Simonelli started the inning with a single to left field, and advanced to third on a stolen base and a groundout by Ladd.

The Eagles would trim their deficit to three runs at 7-4 in the top of the eighth on a two-run homer to left field by Eddie Rohan. The long ball scored Patrick Gamblin, who reached on a fielder's choice prior to Rohan coming to the plate.

The home run by Rohan was the 46th of his career and fourth of the season. He now moves into third place all-time for the Big South Conference in that category passing Mike Costanzo of Coastal Carolina (2003-05), who has 45 career homers. Rohan needs just five more home runs to move past former Chanticleer David Anderson (2006-09) for second place all-time.

Rohan led Winthrop offensively with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate, and tied with Lobacz with two RBI. Joe Jackson posted a team-high four hits for The Citadel, and Ladd had three RBI.

The Eagles will step back into conference play this weekend traveling to Clinton, SC for a three-game series with the Presbyterian College Blue Hose. Game one of the series is scheduled for Friday, May 6 at 3 p.m.
