Baseball Travels To Charleston For Third Matchup This Season With The Citadel

Eagles Have Won First Two Meetings This Season

ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop baseball team will face The Citadel Bulldogs for the third time this season on Wednesday evening in a non-conference showdown at Riley Park. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.

It will be the third meeting this season on the baseball diamond between the Eagles and Bulldogs. Winthrop has won the previous two meetings this season, once on the road and once at home. The Eagles won the first meeting 3-1 on Mar. 16 in Charleston and 9-0 in Rock Hill on Apr. 6.

Eddie Rohan posts a team-best for Winthrop, who holds a 21-24 record on the season, in numerous offensive categories including batting average, home runs, RBI and total bases. He is currently hitting .347 with three home runs, 31 RBI and 82 total bases, and also boasts a .491 slugging percentage and .448 on-base percentage. Along with the .347 average by Rohan, the Eagles have four other players with average over the .300 mark in Adam Gliebe (.317), TJ Olesczuk (.310), Patrick Gamblin (.308) and Cam Walters (.307).

The Winthrop pitching staff is led by Eric Ruth with a 5-1 record in 19 relief appearances this season. Tyler Mizenko has a staff-best 4.12 ERA and .268 opposing average for starting pitchers. Robert Lake has tossed a team-high 69.2 innings in 11 starts this season. Mitchell Knox's 3.28 ERA in 18 appearances is currently a team-low in 2011, and Tommy Lawrence leads the Eagle relievers with a .252 opposing average.

The Citadel enters the midweek contest with a 19-24 overall record. The team is led offensively with a .331 average, while Nick Orvin has seven home runs and Justin Mackert 30 RBI.

The Bulldog pitchers are led by three players in the top pitching categories. Matt Talley has compiled a team-low ERA of 3.32, and Austin Pritcher leads the staff with a 5-3 record on the mound. Jeremy Long's opposing average of .217 is a team-low for The Citadel.

Winthrop leads the all-time series over the Bulldogs 22-17 and will be looking for its third straight win in the series for the first time since winning five-in-a-row from May 18, 2004 until May 3, 2006.

The Eagles will stay on the road this weekend traveling to Clinton, SC for a three-game series with the Presbyterian Blue Hose May 6-8.
