Tyler Mizenko was outstanding tonight,” said head coach Tom Riginos. “It was probably the best outing of the year by him.”

Winthrop went ahead of Gardner-Webb 2-0 after a two run third inning in which Adam Gliebe recorded an RBI single and Chas Crane an RBI sacrifice fly to center field. The Eagles would break the game open in the bottom of the fourth plating three runs and increasing their lead to 5-0. Tyler Cook posted the lone RBI in the inning with his one-out RBI single to left field. Max Vogel then scored on a throwing error by Pagan on a failed pickoff attempt of Cook at first, and he would later come home on a wild pitch.

Gliebe drove in all three runs in the sixth inning with his three RBI double to left field giving Winthrop an 8-0 lead. Cook, Cam Walters and Austen Barber all scored on the double by Gliebe. Cook reached on a single to left field in his at-bat, while Walters walked and Barber singled to center field.

The Eagles added one run in the bottom of the seventh inning to make it a 9-0 contest on Brett Thomas' RBI single to center field driving in Crane. Crane posted a one-out single to center field and moved to second on TJ Olesczuk's single up the middle.

The Runnin' Bulldogs trimmed their deficit to 9-2 with one run each in the eighth and ninth innings. John Harris had an RBI single with one out in the top of the eighth, and Jake Watts scored after Aaron Miller reached on a fielder's choice in the ninth.

“We actually swung the bats very well tonight,” Riginos said. “I like the way the guys are playing right now. We are playing with confidence in all three phases of the game. I'm real proud of the guys and think it was just an all-around very good game tonight.”

Walters led Winthrop offensively with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate, while Gliebe had a team-high four RBI. Watts, Harris and Adam McFarland each had one hit for Gardner-Webb in game one, and Miller and Harris both had one RBI.
