ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop baseball team will wrap up its 2011 regular season this weekend hosting the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs in a three-game Big South Conference series at The Winthrop Ballpark.
The Eagles hold a 25-27 overall record this season and 13-11 mark in Big South play.
Eddie Rohan leads the Winthrop offense with a .340 average, five home runs and 38 RBI on the season. He also holds the team-lead in total bases (96), slugging percentage (.495) and on-base percentage (.443). Rohan, along with
Adam Gliebe,
TJ Olesczuk and
Chas Crane, has played in all 52 games, and one of two players to start in every game as well.
The pitching staff for the Eagles is led by
Eric Ruth with a 6-1 record, with all six wins coming in relief appearances.
Tyler Mizenko tops all starting pitchers with a 3.72 ERA, 55 strikeouts and .255 opposing average. Mateo D'Angelo has only walked 10 batters in 72.1 innings pitched, while
Robert Lake's 80.1 innings are most on the team.
Mitchell Knox's 3.41 ERA in 37.0 innings pitched is lowest on the team.
Gardner-Webb enters the weekend with a 29-19-1 overall record and 13-11 record in conference play. The Runnin' Bulldogs are under the direction of head coach Rusty Stroupe, who is in his ninth season with the program.
The Gardner-Webb offense is led by Adam McFarland with a .333 average, four home runs and 43 RBI. The four home runs are tied for the team lead with Dusty Quattlebaum and Daniel Merck. Quattlebaum also had a team-best 96 total bases and .522 slugging percentage on the season, while Merck posts a .435 on-base percentage.
Conner Scarborough tops the Runnin' Bulldog pitching staff with a 6-2 record on the mound, and Emilio Pagan has a team-low 3.13 ERA and .225 opposing average for the starting pitchers. Jeff Howell leads all relief pitchers with a 2.35 ERA and .213 opposing average. Howell and Adam Izokovic have six saves each to lead the team.
Winthrop leads the all-time series over the Runnin' Bulldogs 29-5 and 19-2 when playing in Rock Hill. Gardner-Webb swept the Eagles during the regular season in 2010 at Forest City, NC, but Winthrop elimiated the Runnin' Bulldogs from the play-in round of the 2010 Big South Baseball Championship. The Eagles have lost four out the last five games against Gardner-Webb, but owns an 18-game winning streak in the series from 1986-2009.
After the three-game series against the Runnin' Bulldogs, Winthrop will head up to Lexington, VA for the 2011 Royal Purple Big South Baseball Championship. The championship this season is being hosted by the VMI Keydets.
