Box Score

ROCK HILL, SC –
The Winthrop baseball team scored seven runs in the first two innings on Sunday afternoon and picked up a 7-6 series-clinching victory over the Mercer Bears at The Winthrop Ballpark in non-conference action.

The Eagles improve to 21-24 on the season, while the Bears fall to 29-17 overall.

“We started out on fire this afternoon,” said head coach Tom Riginos. “We came out ready to play.”

Matt Pierpont (2-3) earned the win in relief tossing 4.1 innings and gave up one run on three hits, no walks and five strikeouts. Justice French (3-2) took the loss surrendering six runs on five hits, one walk and no strikeouts in two-thirds of an inning pitched.

Matt Pierpont just absolutely grinded it out today,” Riginos said. “He made some big pitches when he needed to.”

Mercer struck first with a run in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead over Winthrop. Joe Winker drove in Billy Burns on an RBI groundout for the lone run of the inning. Burns started the game with a single to center field and moved to third base on a double to left center field by Derrick Workman.

The Eagles answered back in their half of the first plating six runs highlighted by a two RBI single to center field by Chas Crane. Matt Lobacz started the scoring with his RBI infield single with no outs and TJ Olesczuk followed with an RBI groundout to second base. Adam Gliebe then drove in Crane with his RBI single, and later came home on Tyler Cook's RBI single to left field. Winthrop went ahead 6-1 after the first inning.

The Eagles extended their lead to 7-1 driving in one run during the bottom of the second. The run came when Eddie Rohan scored on an RBI sacrifice fly to center field by Brett Thomas. Rohan walked to leadoff the second, and advanced to third on a single by Lobacz and sacrifice bunt by Olesczuk.

The Bears trimmed their deficit to 7-5 heading into the sixth scoring three runs in the third and one in the top of the fifth. All three runs in the third inning came on a three-run homer to right field by John Moreland. It was his ninth home run of the season. Thomas Carroll plated Winker with his RBI single in the fifth inning.

Mercer's attempt at a comeback in the ninth inning fell one run short as the only run came when Jacob Tanis hit a solo home run with one out to left center field against Pierpont. The long ball by Tanis was his 13th of the season.

Gliebe went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate to led Winthrop offensively, while Crane had a team-high two RBI. Winker finished the contest with three hits for the Bears, and Moreland drove in three runs.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday, May 4 as they will travel to face The Citadel Bulldogs at Riley Park. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
