Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Mercer To Open Series

The Winthrop baseball team began its three-game series with the Mercer Bears on Saturday afternoon by splitting a doubleheader at The Winthrop Ballpark. The Eagles dropped the opener 5-1 before taking the finale 6-3.

Winthrop's record on the season is now 20-24, while the Bears are 29-16.

Robert Lake (3-4) earned the win in game two pitching 8.0 innings and allowed one run on 11 hits, two walks and five strikeouts. Matt McCall (3-2) took the game two loss surrendering five runs on seven hits, one walk and two strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work.

The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third on a two-out RBI single to center field by Matt Lobacz, but Mercer responded to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth on an RBI single to center field by Derrick Workman.

Winthrop broke the game open in its half of the fourth plating five runs and taking a 6-1 lead. The inning was highlighted by a two RBI triple to right center field by Adam Gliebe which started the scoring for the Eagles. Gliebe then came home when Cam Walters hit into a fielder's choice, and Tyler Cook and Eddie Rohan also added an RBI in the fourth for Winthrop.

The Bears could only cut their deficit to three runs at 6-3 in the top of the ninth driving home two runs. Joe Winker started the ninth inning with a solo home run to right center filed against Eagle reliever Eric Ruth, and John Moreland followed four batters later with an RBI single to right field.

Cook finished game two leading Winthrop at the plate with a 3-for-5 performance, and Gliebe drove in a team-best two RBI. Winker led Mercer offensively going 5-for-5, and was one of three players with one RBI each.

Brandon Love (6-1) received the win in game one throwing 8.0 innings and gave up one run on seven hits, no walks and five strikeouts. Wade Newman (0-3) took the loss throwing 2.1 innings of relief and allowed three runs on one hit, three walks and one strikeout.

The Bears took a 1-0 lead over the Eagles with one run in the top of the third inning when Jacob Tanis recorded an RBI double to left field that brought in Billy Burns.

Winthrop responded to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth when Cook scored on a wild pitch by Love with one out. Cook started the inning with a bunt single and advanced to third after a stolen base and sacrifice bunt by Walters.

Mercer took the lead for good in the top of the seventh driving in four runs for a 5-1 lead. Austin Barrett drove in the first run of the seventh inning on his RBI sacrifice fly to right field and Moreland plated two with his two-out double to left field. Workman came up in the next at-bat and posted an RBI single bringing home Moreland.

Cook, Patrick Gamblin and TJ Olesczuk had two hits each for the Eagles in game one. Winker picked up three hits, while Moreland had two RBI for the Bears.

Winthrop and Mercer will wrap up their three-game series with the rubber match on Sunday, May 1 at 1 p.m.
