Baseball Travels To Face Furman On Tuesday Night In Greenville

Eagles Defeated The Paladins 10-0 In Rock Hill On Mar. 29

ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop baseball team will face the Furman Paladins for the second time this season on Tuesday night at Latham Baseball Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.

The Eagles defeated the Paladins on Mar. 29 in Rock Hill 10-0 behind the pitching performances of Matt Pierpont, Wade Newman and Justin Hopper in which they allowed just five hits, one walk and six strikeouts. The shutout was the first this season for Winthrop. It recorded 14 hits in the first contest, with Tyler Cook, Eddie Rohan, Adam Gliebe and TJ Olesczuk providing two hits each.

The Eagles saw their three-game winning streak come to an end on Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 series finale defeat to the UNC Asheville Bulldogs in Rock Hill. Winthrop is 17-15 this season, while the Paladins enter the contest with a 16-17 overall record.

Rohan continues to lead the Eagles at the plate with a .383 average, and is now tied with Gliebe in the home run category at two apiece. Rohan's 23 RBI also leads the team by just one over Brett Thomas. Cam Walters has stolen a team-high nine bases on the season, perfect in the category, as Winthrop has eclipsed its stolen base mark of last season at 46. The Eagles have stolen 50 bases on the season and ranks them third in the Big South Conference.

Matteo D'Angelo and Eric Ruth both have four wins on the mound this season for Winthrop, while D'Angelo has lowered his ERA to a team-low 2.98 after not allowing a run in 11.0 innings pitched last week. The 8.0 inning performance by Robert Lake on Apr. 9 has increased his team-best mark this season of innings pitched at 51.2. Tyler Mizenko posts an opposing batting average of .253. Tommy Lawrence has four saves on the season, and Ruth is second with three.

Aaron Thompkins' .350 average at the plate is a team-high for Furman, while Will Miller has 21 RBI on the season. Miller, along Will Muzika and Taylor Johnson have two home runs for the Paladins.

Dylan Cole tops the Furman pitching staff with a 2-0 record, 0.92 ERA and seven saves in 15 appearances during the 2011 season. Daniel Stallsmith's 3-2 record on the mound leads the team along with his 45.1 innings pitched.

The contest on Tuesday night will be the first for the Eagles in Greenville since an 11-6 victory on Apr. 7, 2004. Winthrop holds a perfect 10-0 record over the Paladins in Greenville, and a 18-1 all-time series lead.

The Eagles will host the Wake Forest Demon Deacons on Wednesday, Apr. 13 at 6 p.m. before facing Big South member Radford in a three-game road series this weekend.
