Baseball Goes Back On Road For Three-Game Weekend Series At High Point

Eagles One Of Seven Teams In Big South With 3-3 Conference Records

ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop baseball team will travel to face the High Point Panthers this weekend at Williard Stadium in a three-game Big South Conference series.

The Eagles, who defeated the Furman Paladins 10-0 on Tuesday night in Rock Hill, enter the weekend with a 11-13 overall record and 3-3 mark in the conference, while the Panthers are 15-12 on the season and also 3-3 in conference play. Both Winthrop and High Point are two of seven teams in the conference standings with identical 3-3 records.

Senior Eddie Rohan remains at the top of the Eagle statistical chart with an even .400 average at the plate with one home run and 17 RBI. Rohan is tied in the home run category with sophomores Patrick Gamblin and Matt Lobacz. His 46 total bases, .541 slugging percentage and .505 on-base percentage are also team-highs. Sophomore Eric Ruth holds a 3-0 record to lead the Winthrop pitching staff, while junior Tyler Mizenko has a team-low 3.63 ERA for a starting pitcher and an opponent average of .228. Sophomore Tommy Lawrence leads Eagle relievers with a 3.52 ERA and three saves. Senior Robert Lake has tossed a team-leading 38.1 innings on the mound this season. All three weekend starters for Winthrop this season, Mizenko, Lake and senior Matteo D'Angelo all have 22 strikeouts.

The Panthers are under the direction of head coach Craig Cozart, who is entering his third season at the helm of the High Point baseball program. Cozart currently holds a career coaching record of 67-73.

Offensively, the Panthers are led by Steve Antolik with a .379 average, four homers and 25 RBI. Ryan Retz also has four long balls. Antolik has played and started in all 27 games this season for High Point and also leads with 61 total bases and a .592 slugging percentage. On the mound, Mike Caldwell leads the staff with a 3-1 record and a low ERA for pitchers of 3.19. Caldwell has only walked six batters in 36.2 innings pitched. Cody Allen's opposing average of .245 and 37.2 innings pitched leads the team. Spencer Andrews posts a low ERA for relief pitchers of 2.37.

The Eagles lead the all-time series over High Point 27-10, and 15-2 playing in High Point, NC. Winthrop won the first-ever meeting over the Panthers 19-4 in High Point on May 8, 1999 and also won 14 in a row from May 11, 2003 to May 23, 2007. The Panthers took two out of three from Winthrop last season in Rock Hill.

Next week will be  a busy one for the Eagles playing in a total of five contests, including two midweek games. Winthrop will face the North Carolina Tar Heels on Apr. 5 and The Citadel Bulldogs on Apr. 6, before entertaining Big South member UNC Asheville Bulldogs at The Winthrop Ballpark Apr. 8-10.
