No. 4 Coastal Carolina Completes Three-Game Sweep Of Winthrop 10-4

Rohan Hits Team-Best 12th Home Run

, SCThe fourth-ranked Coastal Carolina Chanticleers completed a three-game sweep of the Winthrop Eagles with a 10-4 victory in the series finale on Monday afternoon at Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field.


The Eagles fall to 21-25 on the season and 9-12 in the conference, while the Chanticleers improve to 42-6 overall and 20-0 in conference play.


Dom Patterozzi (0-4) surrendered five runs on six hits, three walks and no strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work to take the loss. Matt Rein (6-0) picked up the win in relief hurling 2.0 innings and gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits, one walk and three strikeouts.


“Dom pitched pretty well overall,” said head coach Joe Hudak. “He made some good pitches and didn't make many bad ones. When he made a bad one they (Coastal Carolina) made him pay.”


The Chanticleers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Tommy La Stella singled home Rico Noel with two outs in the inning. Noel began the inning with a single to right center field.

Eddie Rohan tied the game for Winthrop at 1-1 with his solo home run to left field against Fleet for his team-high 12th long ball of the season, but Coastal Carolina responded with two runs each in the third and fourth innings to take a 5-1 lead. Noel started the third inning with a solo home run to left field and La Stella followed with an RBI single to right field. Taylor Motter and Chance Gilmore started things off for the Chanticleers in the fourth inning by belting back-to-back solo homers.


Coastal Carolina added three more runs in the fifth inning to extend their lead over the Eagles 8-1. Adam Rice began the scoring with his two-run homer to left field and Gilmore also posted an RBI single with one out.


Winthrop
cut the deficit to 8-3 in the top of the sixth after plating two runs on RBI's from Tyler Cook and Sean Sullivan. Cook provided a single to left field in his at-bat and Sullivan reached on a fielder's choice.


The Chanticleers answered back with a run of its own in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI infield single by Rice. Scott Woodward came home on the base hit after he drew a walk three batters earlier.


The Eagles trimmed the deficit to 9-4 in their half of the eighth inning on an RBI single to left field by Adam Gliebe which scored Chas Crane, but Coastal Carolina extended its lead back to six runs at 10-4 in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single to left center field by Rice.


Cook, Gliebe and Pierpont had three hits apiece for Winthrop in the finale, while four different players each had one RBI. Noel and La Stella led the Chanticleers offensively with 3-for-4 performances, and La Stella and Rice both had three RBI.


The Eagles will be back in action on Friday, May 14 as they travel to Lexington, VA to face the VMI Keydets at 6 p.m.
