COLLEGE STATION, TX – The Winthrop baseball team fell to the Texas A&M Aggies 7-0 on Friday evening in the first game of a three-game series at Olsen Field.
The Eagles record drops to 7-1 on the season, while the Aggies improve to 7-2 overall.
“It was just a bad ballgame,” said head coach Joe Hudak. “They (Texas A&M) outplayed us in every phase of the game. It was just one of those games where nothing went right.”
Matteo D'Angelo (1-1) suffered the loss after allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits, one walk and two strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work. Barret Loux (2-1) tossed 7.0 innings and gave up no runs on one hit, two walks and 12 strikeouts to earn the win.
Texas A&M jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning that began with Brodie Greene and Joe Patterson hitting back-to-back singles, and both runners advancing on Caleb Shofner's fly out to center field. Kenny Jackson then brought home Greene with his single, while a throwing error by D'Angelo to first base scored Patterson for the second run of the inning and moved Jackson over to third. Scott Arthur followed by reaching on a fielder's choice and Jackson scored on a throwing error in the process.
The Aggies added two more runs in the sixth inning to increase their lead to 5-0. Shofner was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and advanced to third after Jackson singled to right field on a hit-and-run. Shofner then scored after Arthur grounded out, and Jackson came home on Kevin Gonzalez's RBI single to left field.
Texas A&M made it a 7-0 game after scoring two more runs in the bottom of the eighth. Shofner began the inning with a single to right field, and moved to third base after Jackson's sacrifice bunt and Arthur grounded out to third. Gonzalez then drove in Shofner with his RBI infield single. Gonzalez later scored on an RBI triple by Adam Smith.
“We have to get rid of it, put it behind us and hopefully play a little better tomorrow,” Hudak added.
Tyler Cook, Tyler McBride and Matt Thielepape led Winthrop offensively with one hit each. Collazo and Jackson had three hits apiece for the Aggies, while Arthur and Gonzalez both had two RBI.
The series between the Eagles and Texas A&M will resume with game two on Saturday, Mar. 6 at 3:05 p.m.
