KIAWAH ISLAND, SC--The Winthrop women's golf team finished 29th out of a field of 33 teams in its season-opening tournament at the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate, a 54-hole, three-day event which was played on the Cougar Point and Oak Point courses.
Winthrop stood in 31st place after the first two rounds (341-321), and was able to move up two spots
in the final standings after shooting a team score of 316 on Tuesday to finish at 978, ninety shots behind Miami. The Hurricanes led from start to finish and captured the team title by nine shots over second place Campbell, which will be coming into the Big South Conference in 2011-12. The Hurricanes finished 24-over par at 888 (296-297-295). Two other Big South schools, Charleston Southern and Presbyterian, finished 24th and 25th, respectively at 954 and 956.
The Lady Eagles were led by junior Katie Boling with a 23-over par total of 239 (86-77-76) to finish in a tie for 90th place. Junior
Kayla Cline was a shot back at 240 (83-76-81) to tie for 93rd. Sophomore Danielle Dunagan tied for 134th place with a 249 (87-80-82) while sophomore
Nicole Mooberry came in 143rd with a 252 total (85-89-78). Rounding out the Winthrop players was sophomore
Allison Lee in 160th place with a 263 (88-87-88).
Campbell's Sarah Bejgrowicz and Dayton State College's Mitsuki Katahira tied for tournament medalist honors in the 172-player field as they finished at even par 216.
Winthrop's women will return to action next week (Feb. 27-Mar. 1) when they travel to Mobile, AL for the Lady Jaguar hosted by South Alabama.
