ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Winthrop University baseball standouts
Jaylen Hernandez and
Harrison Wilson were garnered with Big South Conference weekly awards for the week of Apr. 20, as Hernandez was tabbed as Player of the Week, and Wilson earned Relief Pitcher of the Week.
During the week, Hernandez achieved a remarkable .500 batting average across four games. He hit three home runs in consecutive games, accumulating 16 total bases for an impressive 1.143 slugging percentage. Additionally, he reached base 61.1% of the time. His performance was highlighted by a 3-for-3 game with a solo home run and a walk to start the series against USC Upstate. He continued with a 2-for-4 game, adding another solo home run, and concluded the series with a 2-for-5 performance, hitting his third consecutive solo home run. This marked his league-leading 14th home run of the season.
This marks Hernandez's second recognition as a Player of the Week this season, having previously earned the Big South Player of the Week honor on March 2.
Wilson played a crucial role in Winthrop's perfect 4-0 record. He delivered two significant outings against USC Upstate, contributing to the Eagles' first-ever sweep over the Spartans. Wilson began the series with a three-inning save, marking his fourth save of the season, while recording two strikeouts. He later secured a win in extra innings, ensuring the team's sweep. Throughout his appearances against USC Upstate, Wilson maintained a 0.50 WHIP and limited opponents to a .167 batting average against him.
The team recorded a 4-0 mark during the week, making history with their first-ever road victory over Elon and sweeping USC Upstate for the first time in program history.
