ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Winthrop University baseball sophomore
Mason Tompkins was named Co-Starting Pitcher of the Week, along with Redshirt Freshman
Grant McGuire being tabbed as Freshman of the Week for the week of Mar. 16, the conference office announced Monday afternoon.
Tompkins delivered a dominant outing in his lone appearance of the week. Drawing the start in Game One against Princeton, he worked eight innings while allowing just one hit and striking out a career-high seven. Tompkins carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before finishing with one of his strongest performances of the season.
McGuire swung a hot bat throughout the week, recording a hit in all five games for the Eagles. He batted .455 with 10 hits, two doubles, eight RBIs and 12 total bases while reaching base in half of his plate appearances and posting a .545 slugging percentage. McGuire also played a key role in Winthrop's first Big South opening weekend sweep since 2019, tallying seven hits and six RBIs in the three-game series, highlighted by a 3-for-4 performance with two doubles and three RBIs in the finale.
