Former Men's Basketball Standout Eddie Gay Jr. Passes Away

Winthrop Community Mourns The Loss Of Eddie Gay Jr.

Rock Hill, S.C. – Eddie Gay Jr., a former men's basketball standout, passed away on Jan. 2, 2026.

Gay Jr. played for the Eagles from 1989-93 became finished his career as the program's ninth leading scorer all-time with 1,079 points and fourth all-time in total rebounds (637) and blocked shots (76). Was the program's all-time leader in career field goal percentage (.647) until 2024-25.
Today he is 1-of-26 1,000 point scorers in the history of the program. In 1992-93 he played a key role in leading the Eagles to their program's second Big South Conference title game appearance. In 1992-93, Gay Jr. was voted to the Big South All-Conference Team and the Big South All-Tournament Team. The 1992-93 team also held the program scoring record (83.6 ppg) until the 2024-25 season.

Following his graduation at Winthrop he pursued a professional playing career in Europe.

Eddie later built a successful career as a Project Manager and Sales Professional at Unique Kitchen and Bath. He was also a proud member of the SRQ Club. Beyond his professional life, Eddie had a deep passion for music, especially playing the drums and guitar, and he generously gave back to his community by coaching youth basketball teams in Sarasota.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on January 18, 2026, at Tri-Par Estates, 1616 Presido Street, Sarasota, FL 34234.
