Duncomb's 26 Points Helps Lifts Eagles Over Bucs

Rock Hill, S.C. – Logan Duncomb scored a game-high 26 points to lead Winthrop to an 81-77 victory over Charleston Southern, Wednesday evening inside the Winthrop Coliseum.

  • A'lahn Sumler (22 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists, steal)
  • Reis Jones (15 points, 5 rebounds, assist, block)
  • Luke Williams (12 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, block)

FIRST HALF
  • Eagles were on the board first as Logan Duncomb dropped in a short baseline jumper for the early lead
  • Charleston Southern's Brycen Blaine drilled a left wing three for a 7-4 advantage, but a technical foul led to free throws by Kody Clouet and it was a one point game with 17:53 to play
  • Eagles regained the lead 8-7 on a short jumper just outside the lane
  • It was a one point lead for the Bucs after Kareem Rozier banked home a short jumper to trail 13-12 with 14:52 left
  • The Bucs went on a 6-0 run during a four-minute scoring drought by the Eagles to lead 19-12 with 12:01 to play
  • Eagles stopped the run as Rozier drove into the paint and dished to Ed Nnamoko for the finish at the rim with an And 1
  • Nnamoko converted the free throw for the three-point play as the Eagles trailed 19-15 with 10:39 to play
  • A second chance three by Blaine in the corner gave the Bucs their largest lead of the half, 30-21 with a little over seven minutes to go
  • Winthrop responded 11 consecutive points as Tommy Kamarad followed a miss by Clouet with a stick back and then after a Tai Hamilton tip-in made it a one-point deficit the Eagles regained the lead as Kamarad buried a left wing three forcing a time by the Bucs
  • The Bucs grabbed the lead at 36-34 with six seconds left in the half as the Eagles inbounded the ball into Isaiah Wilson who dribbled to mid-court and launched a shot that banked in at the buzzer to lead 37-36 at the half

SECOND HALF
  • Logan Duncomb opened the second half scoring as he got the ball down low and worked his way to the rim before dropping in short jumper
  • Duncomb found Clouet for a left wing three with a pass from underneath the basket to lead by three, but five straight points that included a go-ahead corner three by Nate Brafford has the Bucs back in front 44-42 with just under 18 to play
  • From the 19:01 mark to the 9:46 mark the game was back and forth as there were nine lead changes and the game was tied five times
  • A three by Luke Williams gave the Bucs a 60-57 lead and jump started a 7-1 run that put them on top 64-58 with 7:58 remaining
  • Eagles worked their way back to tie the game at 68-68 with 4:46 to play as Duncomb scored six straight points
  • Trailing by three with 3:17 to play, Clouet drove the left side of the lane and scored an And 1 as he made the free throw to complete the three-point play and tie the game at 73-73
  • Eagles took the lead as Wilson intercepted a pass near the three-point line and flipped a pass ahead to Rozier for the layup with 2:33 left
  • Bucs came right back to tie the game on two free throws by Jesse Hafemeister only to have Duncomb put Winthrop back in front with three-point play with 1:55 to play
  • Eagles went back to Duncomb with just under a minute to go and he delivered with a left-handed hook to lead 80-75 with 50.3 left
  • A'lahn Sumler knocked down a free throw line jumper with 40.3 remaining to make it a one possession game again
  • Duncomb drew a foul and went 1-for-2 at the free throw line for a four point lead, which were the final points of the game

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Winthrop shot 40 percent from the floor while the Bucs were 41 percent from the field
  • Eagles finished with a 51-46 edge on the glass while the Bucs had a 21-16 advantage in second chance points
  • The teams combined for 86 points in the paint as the Eagles outscored the Bucs 46-40
  • Winthrop was 19-for-31 (61%) at the foul line and Charleston Southern was 13-of-23 (57%)
  • Duncomb, who played just 2 minutes in the first half, scored 22 of his 26 points in the second half alone
  • For the game there were 14 lead changes and the game was tied 12 times

NOTABLES
  • This was Winthrop's 12th consecutive win over Charleston Southern
  • It was also the fifth straight home win on the season and have now won 10 of the last 12 regular season league home games
  • Duncomb reach the 20-point mark for the 7th time this season
  • The Eagles led 37-36 at the half and in the last 33 meetings the team that leads at the break has now gone on to win 30 times
