Eagles Cruise At Upstate For 3rd Straight Win

Spartanburg, S.C. – Kareem Rozier scored a game-high 24 points to help lead Winthrop to a third straight win after a 71-50 victory at USC Upstate, Saturday afternoon.

  • B. Garcia (16 points, 6 rebounds, assist, block)

FIRST HALF
  • The first basket of the game came at the 17:55 mark as Mason Bendinger nailed a wing three
  • Eagles began the game 0-for-6 from the floor until Tommy Kamarad knocked down a jumper to trail 3-2
  • Defensively the Eagles held Upstate to ??-for-?? shooting and took their first lead at 4-3 after Kareem Rozier scored at the rim
  • The Eagles shrugged off the slow start and in just a little over two minutes scored 12 consecutive points
  • Following his score off the drive, Rozier popped a right wing three for a 12-3 lead with 14 minutes to play
  • After the 0-for-6 start the Eagles made five straight shots during the run
  • The run came to an end as Carmelo Adkins converted two free throws at the 13:33 mark
  • Winthrop grabbed a double-digit lead at the 11:33 mark as Daylen Berry flipped a pass to Kody Clouet and he drained a three from the right wing to lead 17-5
  • Logan Duncomb scored three straight points as the Eagles led 20-5 at the midway point of the half
  • Seifeldin Hendawy chased down a loose rebound as he saved it from going over the sideline as Berry collected the ball and kicked it to Rozier on the wing as he drained another triple to lead 25-9, forcing a timeout by Upstate
  • With 4:21 remaining in the half, Duncomb found Isaiah Wilson in the corner as he dropped in his second three for an 18-point lead (31-13)
  • Eagles pushed the lead to 19 at the half, 38-19

SECOND HALF
  • Rozier scored the first eight points of the second half as he popped a straight away three and then scored off the drive to force an Upstate timeout
  • Rozier then drained another three to put the Eagles up 46-19, his 5th triple of the game
  • Just before the midway point of the half, Tommy Kamarad made back-to-back jumpers to put the Eagles in front 54-35
  • Upstate cut the Winthrop lead to 15 at the 4:21 mark but Duncomb answered on the other end with a finish at the rim to lead 63-48 with 4:04 left
  • Eagles got the lead back over 20 with 2:12 left as Rozier dropped in his sixth three of the game from the right wing

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Eagles shot 39 percent for the game while holding Upstate to 35 percent
  • Eagles dominated the glass 49-31 and had 18 offensive rebounds to seven for Upstate
  • Winthrop finished the game 12-for-31 behind the arc while the Spartans were 2-of-11
  • Upstate had the advantage in the paint 34-24
  • Rozier led three Eagles in double-figures as Wilson and Clouet finished with 10
  • Eagles were 8-for-14 at the line in the second half and finished the game 11-for-19

NOTABLES
  • This was the 12th game on the year the Eagles connected on 10 or more threes, tied for the 7th most in a single-season
  • This was the 5th straight win against the Spartans
  • Winthrop has won 11 of the last 13 regular season league matchups
