Nick Mayfield And Faith Wood Named Comporium Student Athletes Of The Month

Rock Hill, S.C. – Nick Mayfield and Faith Wood have been named the Comporium Student-Athletes of the Month.

In the final round of stroke play at the 2024 Big South Conference Championship in Fripp Island, S.C. on Sat., Apr. 20, Mayfield finished tied for first but lost on the fourth playoff hole against High Point's Fred Roberts IV for medalist honors.

Mayfield became the first Eagle to finish first since Kyle Christman in 2002. Mayfield posted a final round of 8-under (63) to finish the 54-hole event at 9-under (204). The 8-under round ties the program record and is the lowest by an Eagle in Big South Championship competition.

The 54-hole total of 204 is the lowest by an Eagle in the Big South Championship, topping Zach Seabolt's 209 he posted in 2015 and 2016. It was also just two shots shy of the program record overall of 202 set by Kelly Manders at the Mizuno Southbridge Intercollegiate during the 2007-08 season.

It was also a career-best 54-hole total for Mayfield. Mayfield finished 9-under for the championship, tying Chris Winchip for the lowest 54-hole score by an Eagle. The Eagles would go on to capture the first Big South Conference Championship in program history with a 3-1 victory over Gardner-Webb in the second round of match play last Sunday afternoon.

Wood set two school records twice this month, both in the women's triple jump. At the VertKlasse Meeting in High Point, N.C. from Apr. 5-6, Wood finished sixth with a mark of 11.75m. Her mark set a new school record-breaking Tomeika Banks record from 21 years ago of 11.67.

Then two weeks later at the USC Outdoor Open in Columbia, S.C. on Sat., Apr. 20, Wood broke her two-week old record, this time finishing with a mark of 11.82m for 5th place.
