Eagles Set To Face Defending League Champion Gardner-Webb Saturday Afternoon

Rock Hill, S.C. – Coming off ending a three-game losing streak at UNC Asheville in overtime by a final score of 70-64 on Wednesday night, Winthrop women's basketball (8-10, 2-3 Big South) returns home to face defending Big South champion Gardner-Webb.

SERIES HISTORY VERSUS GARDNER-WEBB
This is the 38th meeting between the Eagles and the Runnin' Bulldogs, with Gardner-Webb leading the series, 27-10. The Runnin' Bulldogs won both meetings last year. The first meeting between the two teams was on Jan. 24, 1980, with Winthrop winning 82-60 at home on the way to winning the first three meetings. Gardner-Webb won the next eight meetings only to see Winthrop counter with four straight wins. Gardner-Webb has totally dominated the series since 2014, winning 19 of the last 22 encounters as well as the last nine. Winthrop will be seeking their first win vs. Gardner-Webb since a 64-62 result on Jan. 19, 2019 on the road. Winthrop will also be seeking their first home win vs. Gardner-Webb since an 81-62 result on Dec. 5, 2015. Gardner-Webb went 29-5 (18-0 Big South) in 2022-23, easily sweeping the regular-season and post-season conference titles and advancing to the first round of the NCAA Tournament, where they fell 103-77 to the second-seeded Utah Utes in Salt Lake City on Mar. 17, 2023.

  • Opened the week with a career-high 20 points and 16 rebounds in an overtime setback to UNC Wilmington, her second double-double of the season.
  • Nearly notched another double-double against Queens as she finished with 19 points and nine rebounds.
  • She shot 50.0 percent from the floor (13-of-16) and 13-of-17 from the free throw line (76.5 percent) for the week.
