Eagles Fall to Top-Seeded High Point in Big South Semifinals

JOHNSON CITY, TENN. -- The Winthrop University women's basketball team saw its season end Saturday night as top-seeded High Point used a 30-point third quarter to pull away for a 79-63 victory in the Big South Conference semifinals. 
FIRST QUARTER 
  • Ruff opened the scoring with two free throws, then picked off a Collins pass on the next possession. 
  • Spencer hit two three-pointers to give HPU an 8-4 lead before Porter tied it with two free throws and a steal-and-score fastbreak layup. 
  • Naomi Wilson hit a jumper off a Ruff assist to give Winthrop a 10-8 lead. 
  • Ruff scored a layup off a Lard assist and Lard added a fastbreak layup to push the lead to 14-8. 
  • Gerdes knocked down a three at the buzzer to cut Winthrop's lead to 14-11 after one. 
  • The Eagles forced seven HP turnovers in the quarter and grabbed 10 offensive rebounds. 

SECOND QUARTER 
  • Gerdes scored a fastbreak layup to tie it at 14-14, then Spencer drilled a three to give HPU a 17-14 lead. 
  • Collins converted on a fastbreak off a steal to push the lead to 26-18 as HPU took control. 
  • Nesland stole a Ryce pass and found Spencer for a three to make it 30-18. 
  • Naomi Wilson scored a jumper off a Pierfax assist and Pierfax converted two free throws, but HPU pushed the lead to 35-23 at the half. 
  • Winthrop shot just 2-of-13 from the field in the quarter and committed seven turnovers. 
  • HPU scored eight fastbreak points and 12 points in the paint during the period. 

THIRD QUARTER 
  • Zavala converted two free throws and Collins scored a layup to push the lead to 39-25 early. 
  • Spencer drilled back-to-back three-pointers to extend the margin to 45-25. 
  • Pierfax answered with a three off a Porter assist to make it 45-28, but Collins scored six straight to push it to 52-31. 
  • Snotherly scored four straight on a tip-in and a jumper to extend the lead to 56-33. 
  • Williams scored two layups, Lard hit a three and Porter converted two free throws to trim the deficit to 56-37. 
  • HPU carried a 65-44 lead into the fourth after shooting 11-of-18 in the period. 

FOURTH QUARTER 
  • Porter opened the fourth with a fastbreak layup off a Lard assist, then Lard added two free throws to make it 48-66. 
  • Pierfax scored a layup and Ryiah Wilson converted two free throws to cut it to 52-68. 
  • Porter drilled a three off a Lard assist to pull within 55-70, but Spencer answered with a fastbreak three to push it back to 55-73. 
  • Williams picked up a technical foul and fouled out with 2:34 remaining. 
  • Porter converted two free throws and Williams scored a jumper before the ejection, but the deficit was too deep. 
  • Lard hit a three off a Porter assist with 20 seconds left to set the final at 63-79. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
  • Porter finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds, going a perfect 8-of-8 from the line with three assists. 
  • Lard added 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting with five assists and two steals in 38 minutes. 
  • Ryiah Wilson recorded five steals off the bench in 28 minutes. 
  • Ruff and Williams both fouled out as foul trouble plagued the Eagles throughout. 
  • Winthrop forced 20 turnovers and recorded 13 steals but was outrebounded 43-31 and outscored in the paint 38-26. 
  • Spencer led HPU with 25 points on 6-of-12 from three, while Collins added 15 points, five steals and four assists.
