The coliseum is a multi-purpose facility and is used year-around for athletic events, concerts, conventions, receptions, conferences, and various entertainment events. The beautiful Winthrop Coliseum is also the headquarters for the athletic department.

Winthrop Coliseum has played host to the Big South Conference Men's Basketball Championship game seven times (most recently 2017). The Eagles have captured Big South Championships on their home court in 1988, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2017.

The ceiling of the building rises 34 feet above the arena floor and the structure sits on pilings that extend 27-and-one-half feet below ground. The overall size of the building is 271.6 feet x 321.6 feet and covers 158,884 square feet.

Fans are also entertained by a large four-sided video screen and message board which shows live action video and advertising billboards. The coliseum is also home to the Winthrop Athletics Hall of Fame.
