Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop men's and women's track and field programs open up the 2023-24 season at the Liberty Kickoff on Thursday.

ABOUT THE EAGLES
- The Eagles open their indoor track and field season with a post-Thanksgiving meet in Lynchburg. Winthrop looks to build on their excellent fall with a blend of accomplished returners and newcomers with potential.
- The women's side features 20 newcomers and 13 returnees.
- The men's side features 12 newcomers and 29 returnees.
- On the women's side, Johntavia Shaw was honored as the Big South Women's Freshman Athlete of the Week for competitions during the opening weekend of the indoor season (Dec. 1-4).
- Shaw won the shot put with a mark of 13.41m at the VMI Winter Classic from Jan. 27-28 last season.
- Shaw then won the shot put and discus throw with marks of 13.42 and 44.01m, respectively at the Adidas/Winthrop Invitational from Mar. 24-25.
- She then won the shot put with a mark of 13.28m at the Catamount Classic from Apr. 14-15.
- Ambar Nunez-Gomez won the hammer throw with a toss of 54.64m, becoming the first women's hammer champion at Winthrop since Marthaline Cooper in 2016 on the first day of the Big South Outdoor Championships on May 10.
- Nunez-Gomez is now a three-time all-conference performer.
- Monay James officially took home third in the heptathlon, earning six points for her team and 4,482 points for herself on the second day of the Big South Outdoor Championships on May 11.
- As part of the heptathlon, she competed in three more events, finishing with marks of 5.50m in the long jump (finishing first), 29.44m in the javelin throw (finishing third) and 2:41.92 in the 800m run.
- This earned her all-conference honors for the first time.
- She is the first Eagle to finish in the top three in the heptathlon at the conference outdoor championships since Taryn Deleon did it in 2017 with 4,745 points.
- She is only the third Winthrop athlete to finish in the top three in this category.
- On the men's side, Winthrop finished as the runner-up in the men's 4x100 relay with a time of 40.61, setting a school record on the final day of the Big South Outdoor Championships on May 12.
- The 4x100 relay team included Toluwayan Agbeyomi, Kevin Brown, Carlos Frank Jr. and Jonquez Webb.
- This is Winthrop's first all-conference finish in this event since 2015, when the Eagles finished with a time of 41.45 and the eighth time overall.
- In the final race of the day, the men's 4x400 relay team finished third with a time of 3:15.17, placing all-conference with the finish and setting a school record.
- The 4x400 relay team included Jurnii Lucas, Triston Morgan, Brown and Bautista Vivanco.
- This is Winthrop's first all-conference placement in this event since 2019, when the Eagles also finished third with a time of 3:17.03 and the fifth time overall
- Agbeyomi set a school record in the semifinals of the 200m dash with a time of 21.75 at the Big South Indoor Championships at Virginia Tech on Feb. 24-25 last season.
- The Eagles broke two school records in the 200m dash and the 4x400 medley relay in the same event.
- Noah Woodbury won the 10000m run with a time of 33:46.52 at the home meet.
- Nolan Weisdorfer won the 3000 steeplechase with a time of 10:33.60 at home as well.
INDOOR TRACK SCHEDULE
The Liberty Kickoff highlights an indoor schedule that includes six meets prior to the Big South Conference Indoor Championship Feb. 23-24. The Eagles will head to the Carolina Challenge Jan. 19-20 and round out the month of January at the VMI Invitational Jan. 26-27.
In February the Eagles return to Lynchburg, Va. for the Liberty Open Feb. 3 and will also travel to Nashville for the Music City Challenge (Feb. 9-10) and to Blacksburg, Va. for the Virginia Tech Challenge (Feb. 16-17).
