Rock Hill, S.C. – Former Winthrop women's basketball player Judy Wilkins Rose was inducted into the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame as part of the class of 2022, Monday evening at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center.
Rose was 1-of-4 inductees in the 2022 class that included former South Carolina football standout Sydney Rice, former Wofford College head football coach Mike Ayers and former Clemson football athletic trainer Fred Hoover.
A member of the Winthrop College class of 1974, she was a four-year member of the women's basketball team and served as team captain for three seasons. Following her collegiate career she made the move to coaching and eventually into athletic administration at UNC Charlotte.
During her time as an Eagle she helped guide the women's basketball team to one AIAW national tournament, three AIAW regional tournament appearances and the South Carolina AIAW championship.
After graduation Rose went to Tennessee to serve as an assistant coach for the women's basketball program while earning her master's degree. In 1975 she was named the head coach of the Charlotte 49ers women's basketball program. After coaching for seven seasons with the 49ers she moved into the role of Assistant Director of Athletics. In 1990 she was named the Director of Athletics where she spent 28 years leading the Charlotte 49ers athletic department.
Rose became just the third female to be put in charge of an NCAA Division I program. She has served on the NCAA Division I men's basketball committee and completed a term as the 2003-04 President of the National Association of College Directors of Athletics (NACDA).
Rose guided the 49ers into the world of NCAA collegiate football in 2013, which began with a two-year stint as an FBS Independent before moving to the FBS Conference USA in 2015. In 2012, the football field house was named by donor Dale Halton in her honor: Judy W. Rose Football center. She also helped develop over $100 million worth of athletic facilities which enhanced playing venues, academic services, strength and conditioning programs, training and medical support to improve the experience of each and every student-athlete.
Also inducted on Monday evening was the class of 2020 that included Gaylord Perry (baseball), Dan Driessen (baseball), Ed Lynch (baseball), C.J. Spiller (football), Todd Ellis (football), Roberta Williams (basketball), and Peter Boulware (football).
Rose became just the second person with ties to Winthrop University to be inducted into the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame. Nield Gordon is the other after his successful career coaching men's basketball and Newberry College and Winthrop.
Rose was inducted into the Winthrop Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005 and the North Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame in 2020.
