Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop head women's soccer coach
Spencer Smith announced an 18-game scheduled for the 2021 season that includes eight home contests.
The Eagles open the season with three straight exhibitions games starting Aug. 8 at Western Carolina. Winthrop will host Coastal Carolina in an exhibition on Aug. 12 and then finish its preseason with an exhibition game at Charlotte on Aug. 15.
The regular season will begin with back-to-back home games with the opener against Alabama State on Aug. 20 and then against Appalachian State on Aug. 25. Those are the only home non-conference regular season games the Eagles will host as they battle a 10-game league slate. The non-conference road schedule begins Aug. 28 at VMI as the Eagles will also travel to North Florida (Sept. 5) and Wofford (Sept. 12).
Winthrop opens Big South Conference action on Sept. 18 at home against Longwood. The Eagles will also host league games against USC Upstate (Sept. 25), Presbyterian College (Oct. 6), Campbell (Oct. 16) and UNC Asheville (Oct. 20). The conference road schedule begins Sept. 22 at Gardner-Webb as the Eagles will also travel to High Point (Sept. 29), Hampton (Oct. 2), Radford (Oct. 9), and Charleston Southern (Oct. 19).
The Eagles will play back-to-back home games just twice on the year. They will start the regular season with two straight home games and then have back-to-back to end the regular season. There is a stretch of four straight road games (Sept. 29-Oct. 13), which will mark 1-of-2 times on the season the team will play at least three straight road games.
The Big South Conference Tournament field has been reduced to six teams as the top two seeds will receive a bye into the semifinals. The games will be at the site of the higher seed for each individual game. The quarterfinals will be Nov. 7 followed by the semifinals on Nov. 10 and the championship game on Nov. 14.
Head Coach Spencer Smith's Thoughts On The 2021 Schedule
"We look forward to getting back on the field this coming fall. Our schedule provides us quality non-conference opponents which will help us prepare for another challenging Big South season. While we don't have a lot of time to prepare for our first opponent, Alabama State, our team is excited for the opportunity to compete against all of our opponents."
