Eagles Host Wofford, Travel to UNC Asheville In Busy Weekend

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop men's tennis is set for two matches in three days when they take on Wofford and UNC Asheville this weekend.

EYE ON THE EAGLES
  • Winthrop heads into the weekend following a loss to Appalachian State.  The Eagles had previously earned their first win of the season against Hampton in their Big South opener.
  • Abhimanyu Vannemreddy has won three straight matches at No. 1 singles for the Eagles.  The freshman was named Player of the Week as well as Freshman of the Week earlier in the season.
  • Gabriel Dias returned from injury last weekend and partnered with James Hartson at No. 3 doubles.  The senior was a team captain in 2019.
  • Winthrop continues to feature a young starting lineup.  In the six singles positions, four are occupied by freshmen.
 WHAT'S UP WITH WOFFORD?
  • The Terriers have won their last two matches.  Last weekend they defeated College of Charleston and Richmond.
  • Omar Williams has won each of his last two matches at No. 1 singles.  The senior has been even better in doubles play. Despite losing in doubles against Richmond, Williams is 4-1 on the series splitting time with partners Julian Chousa and Bryce Keim.
  • Lucas Cerbelli started 0-3 in singles play, but has one his last two matches at No. 2 singles.
ASSESSING ASHVILLE
  • The Bulldogs are 4-5 entering the weekend and are coming off a 7-0 victory over Tusculum.
  • UNC Asheville will face South Carolina State on Friday before Sunday's matchup with Winthrop.
  • Last season the Bulldogs defeated Winthrop in their lone meeting, 4-3.
  • Charlie Morkel and Oli Nolan have split time at No. 1 singles to open 2020.  Morkel was named Big South Second-Team All-Conference in singles in 2019 while Nolan was one of the best doubles players in the country.
