Women's Tennis Opens 2020 Season At Wake Forest Saturday Afternoon

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop women's tennis opens the 2020 season on the road at ACC foe Wake Forest, Saturday afternoon.

THIS WEEKEND
Saturday, Jan. 18 – Winthrop at Wake Forest | Winston-Salem, NC | Wake Forest Tennis Center | 3 p.m.

SEASON OUTLOOK
  • There are a lot of unknown's headed into the 2020 season as the Eagles look to replace three spots vacated as Lauren Proctor, Megan Kauffman, and Ellie Burns have graduated.
  • In 2019, the three combined for 44 wins in singles and 32 wins in doubles.
  • The top returner is senior Alisa Soloveva, who is coming off a 19-1 record in singles and 7-7 mark in doubles with Rafaela Santos
  • Soloveva, the 2017 Big South Freshman of the Year, has a career mark of 56-10
  • She had a strong fall and earned a national ranking of 95th heading into the spring
  • Perhaps the highlight of the fall for Soloveva was earning a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 win over 20th-ranked Asuka Kwai from Illinois
  • Also returning is junior Rafaela Santos, who was 14-7 last season (14-6 at No. 4 singles).
  • Junior Taylor Van Eck is the third returner with experience from last year as she was 12-12 at No. 5 singles and 8-1 in the conference
  • Newcomers Samantha Nanere and Angela Georgieva joined the Eagles before the fall semester, while Jaime Edwards and Alexandra Da Silva joined the team this semester.
  • Nanere and Georgieva both had strong showings in the fall.
 
MATCHUP
  • Winthrop is 3-6 all-time against Wake Forest
  • This marks the third time in the past six seasons the Eagles open the spring season against Wake Forest
  • Eagles last win over the Demon Deacons was 2014 (4-3)
  • Wake Forest won last year's meeting 6-1 on Feb. 16
 
WAKE FOREST
  • 2020 Record: 2-0
  • 2019 Record: 21-9
  • Oracle/ITA National Ranking: 24th
  • Posted a 14-1 mark at home last season with the only loss coming to 10th-ranked North Carolina State, 5-2
  • Opened the season in Dallas last weekend at the SMU Invitational and also had individuals competing at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Palm Springs, CA
  • Eliza Omirou and M.C. Meredith are the top returners from last year's team as the pair ended the fall ranked 10th nationally in doubles
  • Carolyn Campana enters the spring ranked No. 44 in singles while her sister Anna Campana also ended the fall ranked at No. 82
  • Winthrop will be the second match of the day for Wake Forest as it will face the College of Charleston at 10 a.m.
