ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Winthrop men's basketball program has announced a four-year series with longtime rival Costal Carolina. The series will begin on Saturday, December 7, 2019 in Rock Hill at the Winthrop Coliseum. Winthrop will travel to Coastal Carolina in 2020, before returning to Rock Hill in 2021, and ending the series back in Conway, S.C. in 2022.
 
"We're thrilled to re-establish a long-time rivalry with a great non-conference opponent in Coastal Carolina," said Dr. Ken Halpin, Winthrop's vice-president for intercollegiate athletics. "To have the first game in Rock Hill, hopefully in front of a packed Winthrop Coliseum, should be an incredible environment for both our student-athletes and fans."
 
Coastal Carolina was a long-time member of the Big South Conference before leaving to join the Sun Belt Conference in 2016. The in-state rivals had a number of exciting battles on the hardwood over the years, and look to continue that trend over the next four years.
 
The two teams last met February 18, 2016 in Rock Hill, with Winthrop prevailing 79-67 to avenge a loss to the Chanticleers earlier in the season. Xavier Cooks poured in 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Eagles. Since 2000-01, Winthrop holds a 21-14 record over Coastal.
