ROCK HILL, SC – Winthrop head men's basketball coach
Pat Kelsey announced another exciting, competitive schedule for the 2019-20 season.
The Eagles will test themselves on the road in the non-conference in preparation for what is lining up to be another competitive season in the Big South Conference. The non-conference D1 slate features six programs that enjoyed 20-win seasons and combined to win 213 games in 2018-19. The entire schedule will feature 10 opponents that had at least 20 wins last year.
ROAD WARRIORS
Winthrop is wasting no time in testing its 2019-20 squad by playing the first four games away from home. The season opener will be Nov. 7 at Hartford followed by a west coast swing through Fresno State on Nov. 10 and Saint Mary's (CA) on Nov. 11. The Eagles will wrap-up the four-game road trip at East Tennessee State on Nov. 14.
During
Pat Kelsey's tenure, the Eagles have traveled to some of the toughest places to play such as Value City Arena (Ohio State), Verizon Wireless Arena (VCU), Xfinity Center (Maryland), UD Arena (Dayton) and last year the Eagles visited Rupp Arena. In 2019-20, the Eagles head to Cameron Indoor Stadium to take on Duke on Nov. 29.
Following the Duke contest, the Eagles return home to face Coastal and then back on the road as they'll visit Texas Christian (Dec. 11) and Furman (Dec. 14). The stretch to start the season will be 7-of-11 games on the road.
SERIES HISTORY: FIRST MEETING
This will be the first time the Eagles have ever faced Fresno State, Saint Mary's (CA) and TCU. This will be the program's first ever trip to the state of California as the Eagles have only ever faced one opponent from the Golden State. Winthrop traveled to the Arizona State Sun Devil Classic in 2003 and took on San Diego in a 70-66 victory. The trip to Fort Worth, TX will be Winthrop's first time in the Lone Star State since Jan. 2, 2007 when the Eagles took on Texas A&M in College Station, TX.
FAMILIAR FOES
The Eagles will take on some regional programs they've faced a few times since like the trip to ETSU as well as a trip to Furman on Dec. 14 and a home game against former Big South member Elon on Dec. 21. Perhaps the most intriguing matchup against a familiar foe will be on Dec. 7, when the Eagles renew their rivalry with Coastal Carolina in Rock Hill. It will be the first meeting since the Chanticleers moved to the Sun Belt Conference at the start of the 2016-17 season.
The schedule also includes a couple of return games as the Eagles will host Tennessee Tech (Nov. 21) and Southern Illinois – Edwardsville (Dec. 17).
HOME SWEET HOME
The Eagles are 84-20 during the
Pat Kelsey era and as a program enjoy an all-time winning percentage of 72% inside the Winthrop Coliseum. Since the 1998-99 season, the Eagles are 244-54 at home (82%). The Eagles will have six non-conference home games that include Coastal Carolina, Tennessee Tech, SIUE, Elon, Mid-Atlantic Christian and Pfeiffer. Including the conference games, Winthrop hosts 15 home games this season.
BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE
The Eagles will play an 18-game conference schedule with nine home games and nine road games. League play begins Jan. 2 as the Eagles open at home against Longwood. Winthrop will also host defending Big South Champion Gardner-Webb (Jan. 11), USC Upstate (Jan. 23), Presbyterian College (Jan. 25), UNC Asheville (Feb. 1), Campbell (Feb. 6), Radford (Feb. 10), Hampton (Feb. 22) and High Point (Feb. 29).
Despite opening league play at home, Winthrop will be on the road for four of its first six conference contests. After opening at home against Longwood, the Eagles travel to Campbell (Jan. 4) and then High Point (Jan. 8). The remainder of the road schedule includes Hampton (Jan. 16), Radford (Jan. 20), Charleston Southern (Jan. 30), Longwood (Feb. 8), Gardner-Webb (Feb. 13), Presbyterian College (Feb. 15), and USC Upstate (Feb. 27). This will be the first time since 1985 the Eagles won't travel to UNC Asheville for a conference matchup.
The format for the Big South Conference Tournament remains the same with the number one seed hosting the quarterfinals and semifinals and the highest remaining seed hosting the championship game.
AMONG THE NCAA LEADERS
In 2018-19, the Eagles were the top team in the country for three-point field goals per game (12.4) and were 8
th in scoring offense (83.3). Among this year's opponents, eight of them were in the Top 34 nationally in three-point field goals made last season and eight were among the Top 75 scoring teams.
The 12.4 threes per game by the Eagles were a program record. It was the 4
th consecutive year the Eagles set a program record for threes per game. The 12.4 average ranks 5
th all-time in the history of NCAA D1. Over 30 games, the Eagles made 372 threes, which were tied for the 5
th most in 2018-19 and broke the program record by 59. That total would have been the 18
th most in a single-season at the NCAA D1 level, but with four other teams finishing ahead of them the 372 threes are tied for the 22
nd most.
Over the last four seasons, the Eagles have ranked among the nation's leaders in threes per game and have led the Big South in threes per game the last three seasons.
