Whitten Dominates To Lead Eagles Past Bulldogs

Box Score CHALRESTON, S.C. - Winthrop baseball was winless in road games entering Wednesday's contest at The Citadel, but the Eagles picked up their first win away from home at Riley Park thanks in large part to Cody Whitten, who tossed eight shutout innings and picked up his first win of the season. Winthrop is now 5-6 overall having won their last two contests, and The Citadel drops to 5-7 with the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Sophomore Cody Whitten turned in the best outing of his Winthrop career on Wednesday, completing eight innings and coming out for the ninth. The left hander stifled the Bulldog bats all afternoon, allowing only four hits. Whitten struck out four and walked only one, inducing weak contact on a regular basis. Whitten did not allow a baserunner to reach from the fifth to the eighth inning, retiring all 12 Bulldogs he faced in that span. Whitten was the winning pitcher on Wednesday to give him a 1-0 record on the season.

- The Citadel made a threat in the ninth inning, as Mason Groves came on to replace Whitten on the mound with runners on first and second. After hitting the first man he faced to heighten the tension and load the bases, Groves was able to seal the deal. The Redshirt Junior induced a fielder's choice, followed by a strikeout and a groundout to end the ballgame. Groves earned his second save of the season on Wednesday afternoon.

- The Eagles scored twice in the top of the third inning to break the scoreless tie. Jake Sullivan led of the inning by reaching on a fielding error, and a single and two groundouts brought Sullivan to the plate. Winthrop's second run scored when Scout McFalls reached on the second Bulldog error of the inning, driving in CJ Conrad

-The Eagles added another run in the top of the fourth when Jake Sullivan singled into right field to score Hunter Lipscomb from second base.

- Run number four came in the top of the fifth inning. The Eagles manufactured it with two outs, starting with a single by Spencer Yankle. After Hunter Lipscomb walked to move Yankle to second base, Dillon Morton knocked a single into left center field, scoring Yankle to make it a 4-0 game.

NOTABLES:

- Cody Whitten's start on Wednesday was not only the best outing of his Winthrop career, but also the longest. The southpaw's next longest outing was 6.0 innings against UNC Greensboro, coming May 8 of last season.

- Spencer Yankle has quietly become perhaps the Eagles' most consistent hitter in 2019. The junior college transfer is now hitting .371 on the season (13-35) with an on base percentage of .436

UP NEXT: The Eagles will host the Penn Quakers for a three game series this weekend at the Winthrop Ballpark, game one coming Friday night at 6 p.m.
