* Swamp struggles: Winthrop is coming off being swept in three games by the nationally ranked Florida Gators in Gainesville. The Eagles allowed season highs in runs scored with the Gators plating 16 runs in game one and exploding for 28 in game two. Winthrop scored first in each of the first two games but the Gator offense proved to be too much in each contest. The series finale, a seven-inning doubleheader game because of Saturday's rainout, was a much closer 5-3 contest. Errors and lack of timely offense proved fatal for Winthrop in game three, as the Eagles made four errors on defense (four of Florida's five runs were unearned) and left the tying run at the plate to end the ballgame.

* Pawelczyk performs again: Senior right hander Nate Pawelczyk turned in his third straight quality start to open the season in the series final. Despite being handed the loss to go to 2-1 on the year, Pawelczyk kept the potent Gator bats off balance in his complete game, six-inning effort. Pawelczyk scattered eight hits and allowed only one earned run, striking out four and walking one.

* Middle inning struggles: Of the 49 runs the Eagles allowed this past weekend, 35 of them came in either the fourth, fifth, or sixth innings. Winthrop's Friday starter Thad Harris only got one out into the fourth inning, and ace Zach Peek was roughed up for ten earned runs in 3.1 innings in game two.

* Mashing Mulkey: Matthew Mulkey was one of the bright spots for the weekend for the Eagles, as the senior went 4-10 at the plate with a pair of home runs, giving him three long balls on the year. His second home run came in game two of the series and completely cleared the bleachers in left field at Alfred A McKethan Stadium. Mulkey also knocked a double, scored three runs, and played errorless outfield defense.

* Offensive stability: Despite plating only 12 runs in the weekend series, the Eagles still hold the second highest team batting average in the Big South Conference (.272). Winthrop leads the Big South in doubles with 18 and is second in the league in home runs with seven.

* Recent Success: Winthrop looks to put the weekend in the rear view mirror and look to a matchup against a UNCG program that the Eagles have had success against. After splitting a home-and-home series last season, Winthrop is 11-8 all time against the Spartans. Winthrop was victorious in the last meeting between the two schools, a 6-2 game in Greensboro on May 8 of last year. As for Wednesday's matchup with The Citadel, the Bulldogs hold a tight 26-25 advantage in the all time series. The Eagles swept the series last year with the Bulldogs, winning 8-1 at the Winthrop Ballpark and competing the season sweep with a 12-6 win in Charleston.
