CARY, N.C. – Winthrop men's tennis competed at the ITA Carolina Regional Championship Friday co-hosted by Duke and NC State.
 
In the first round of the singles main draw, the Eagles' seniors both took on two of the championship's top-10 seeds. Senior Gabriel Dias fell to the 10^th-seeded player in the tournament, South Carolina's Connor Thompson 6-1, 6-2. Seventh-seeded Edu Guell of Duke defeated Winthrop's Connor Williamson 6-0, 6-0.
 
Freshman Miha Velicki took on Furman's Jake Munns with Munns coming out on top 6-3, 6-1. Fellow newcomer Abhimanyu Vannemreddy fell to ECU's Agustin Tamagnone 6-2, 6-1.
 
The Eagles bounced back in the consolation draw, with every player picking up at least one win.
 
Dias rebounded with a straight-set win over Gonzalo Achondo of Coastal Carolina 7-6 (3), 6-4 and advanced to the Round of 16 with a third-set tiebreaker win over Christos Dagklis of NC Central 4-6, 6-4, 10-4. His run ended there with a loss to Charlotte's Henry Lieberman, 6-0, 6-4.   
 
Velicki picked up a win in the consolation round, outlasting ECU's Javier Renones in three sets 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-2, but fell in a closely fought third-set tiebreaker in the next round to Coastal Carolina's Chesco Cori 6-4, 5-7, 12-10.
 
Williamson snagged a victory over an ACC foe as he defeated Wake Forest's Brant Fenno in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. The senior would pick up two more wins, downing UNCG's Oliver Palmer 6-2, 6-2 and NC A&T's Vasil Ivanov 7-6(5), 6-1, before a loss to Furman's James Roelofse in the quarterfinals 6-1, 6-3.
 
Vannemreddy also posted an ACC win, knocking off NC State's Joseph Schrader 7-6 (5), 6-2, and advanced to the Round of 16 with a 6-2, 6-1 over Wofford's Julian Chousa. His run ended there as South Carolina's Thomas Brown took a third-set tiebreaker win to the quarterfinals 6-3, 2-6, 10-5.
 
Winthrop will compete at Furman in a hidden dual-style tournament and at the Big South Fall Individual Tournament in Clinton, S.C. Oct. 25-27 to complete the team's fall competition season.
