LAST TIME THESE TEAMS MET
The Eagles and Highlanders met in Radford, VA last year in late October. The Highlanders scored two first half goals en route to a 3-1 victory. The first goal came in the 9
th minute as Kieran Roberts converted a penalty and three and a half minutes later Amadou Diop scored for a quick two goal lead.
Aidan McCormick made the save initially on the shot but couldn't corral the rebound before it spun into the goal. The Eagles nearly cut the deficit in half in the 25
th minute when
Jogvan Jacobsen's shot was cleared off the line. Jacobsen had another good chance in the 59
th minute as his header from about eight yards from goal was tipped over the bar. Radford scored on a counter to make it 3-0 before the Eagles finally broke through with a goal in the 71
st minute when
Davis Bryan scored off a pass from
Jonathan Foster. Winthrop finished with a 13-12 edge in shots as both teams finished with seven shots on goal.
SCOUTING THE HIGHLANDERS
Coming off a 3-0 win over USC Upstate on Wednesday for the second league win of the season. The victory was the second straight for Radford as it will play its third road game in the last four contests on Saturday. Radford this season is 1-4 on the road with all four losses by a single goal. Radford is scoring 1.38 goals per game this year while allowing 1.62 per game. Mouhameth Thiam is tied for the team lead in points with eight (3g, 2a). Amadou Diop, Octatvio O'Campo and Pape Oumar Gueye also have eight points. Joseba Incera has seen the majority of time in goal this season as he has a 1.39 goals against average and 31 saves.
A GLANCE AT THE EAGLES
Jogvan Jacobsen's two goals led the Eagles to a 2-1 road win at Longwood on Tuesday for the team's first league win. It was a key win for the Eagles as they have their sights on grabbing one of the Top 6 spots to play in the Big South Conference Tournament. This matchup is a key one for the Eagles as they sit one win behind Radford, Presbyterian College and UNC Asheville in the conference standings.
Jordan Walshaw set up the first goal against Longwood and is now tied for the overall lead in assists in the conference with Radford's Pape Gueye. Walshaw leads the conference in assists per game and is the team leader with eight points (1g, 6a). Jacobsen is now second on the team with seven points followed by
Cameron Thayer and
Ben Goodman. Jacobsen is the second Winthrop player to score two goals in a game this season as Thayer did so in the win over College of Charleston.
10th YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF 2009 BIG SOUTH CHAMPIONSHIP
This season the Eagles celebrate the 10
th anniversary of the 2009 Big South Conference Championship team. The Eagles were coming off a championship in 2008 as it lost some of the greatest players in the history of the program. The Eagles were still loaded with talent and after dropping the opener 3-1 at North Carolina State, they won five in a row. Heading into the Big South Tournament the Eagles were struggling, having lost three straight (outscored 10-1). Winthrop, seeded fourth, defeated Gardner-Webb in penalties to advance to the semifinals and then advanced to the championship after defeating top-seeded Coastal Carolina 4-2 in penalties. The Eagles went on to defeat Liberty 2-1 in the championship game, advancing to the NCAA Tournament for a second straight season. Winthrop went on to lose 3-2 at 20
th-ranked Duke in the opening round of the NCAA College Cup.
BIG SOUTH PRESEASON POLL
The Eagles were voted 7
th in the 2019 Big South Conference preseason poll. Winthrop returns nine players that started at least eight games from a team that was 3-5 in the league last year. The Eagles finished in 7
th last season, a point out of tying Longwood and USC Upstate for 6
th. Defending regular-season champion High Point is the preseason favorite while Radford and Campbell tied for 2
nd in the poll.
WHAT'S AHEAD
Winthrop will finish the season with three of its last four games on the road. The Eagles will wrap-up their non-conference schedule on Tuesday, Oct. 22 when they travel to Statesboro, GA to take on Georgia Southern at 7 p.m.
