ROCK HILL, S.C. - Winthrop men's tennis opens the 2019 spring campaign with a nonconference contest against nearby Charlotte Sat., Jan. 12 at 6 p.m. With the cold temperatures in the area, the squads are taking the match indoors at Life Time Athletic Club (11220 Golf Links Dr, Charlotte, NC 28277).

EAGLE HIGHLIGHTS ENTERING 2019
-Winthrop welcomes two newcomers to the 2019 squad in Alberto Tinagli and Lluis Miralles, both hailing from Barcelona, Spain.

-Diego Quiroz and Gabriel Dias have both stepped up as leaders on the squad and will serve as team captains.

-In addition to a strong fall tournament performance, the Eagles posted an impressive 3.61 team GPA for the fall semester.

-Winthrop completed the 2018 regular season with an undefeated Big South conference record (7-0) and 11-7 overall, claiming the regular season Big South championship. It was the most league wins for the program since the 2014 squad went 6-2 in Big South play and the best record since the 2011 team finished the regular season 6-0 in league play and 16-6 overall.

THE MATCH-UP
-The match will be the second of the day for the 49ers, who are hosting another Big South squad, Prebyterian College, for a match at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

-Charlotte finished the 2018 season at 12-15 overall, 1-2 in Conference USA. The 49ers defeated Winthrop 6-1 on Apr. 6, 2018 the Eagles' final nonconference match of last season.

UP NEXT
The Eagles host their home opener next Sat., Jan. 19 with a doubleheader of matches against Queens University at Rock Hill Tennis Center. Match times are set for 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
