COLUMBIA, S.C. – The men's and women's cross country opened up the 2018 season at the Carolina Challenge Saturday morning. The men finished fourth while the women were fifth.

Winthrop Highlights
- Harper Henson had the best finish between the men's and women's team as she placed 21st with a time of 18:57.2
- Freshman Olivia Esselman was just two seconds behind Harper with a time of 18.59.3 as she finished 24th
- East Carolina took first while Clemson and South Carolina rounded out the Top 3 on the women's side
- The top runner for the men was freshman Will Metcalf-shull as he placed 24th with a time of 17:12.1
- Junior Blair Bijeau placed 27th with a time of 17:34 while junior Hunter Jarvis was 32nd with a time of 18:13
Post-meet Thoughts
"The women ran very well in tough conditions as Harper and Olivia led the team as expected with near personal best times," said Winthrop head cross country coach
