ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop men's tennis (9-7, 5-0 Big South) fell short of knocking off Charlotte (11-13, 1-2 C-USA) Friday afternoon as the 49ers earned a 6-1 victory at Rock Hill Tennis Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The 49ers took the doubles point to get off to a quick start with wins on courts one and two. Though Winthrop battled on all courts, Charlotte clinched the match with singles wins on three, four and six.
-On court two, senior
Tremayne Mitchell dropped his first set 3-6, but battled back for a three-set victory. In the second set Mitchell put together a big break and held serve for his first lead of the match at 4-3. Mitchell wouldn't look back from there, going up 5-3 on another break and going on to win the set 6-4 to force a third-set decision, which he dominated 6-1.
-On courts one and five,
Diego Quiroz and Josh Ryan each won their first sets, but were bested in tiebreakers in the second set. With the match already clinched by the 49ers, both courts would go to tiebreakers to decide the third set, with Charlotte coming out on top.

Tremayne Mitchell won his 10th-straight singles match, his team-leading 13
th singles victory on the season, which is a career-high. Mitchell also remains undefeated in three-set matches, improving to 7-0 on the season.

Winthrop is back on the road to take on Liberty in Big South play on Sun., Apr. 8 in a crucial Big South match-up as the Eagles sit atop the standings with the Flames right at their heels with just one loss (recorded Friday at PC.)
