CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Winthrop women's tennis (14-4, 7-0 Big South) battled in a nearly four-hour match just across the state line at Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex to take a 4-3 victory over Charlotte (7-11, 0-2)
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
-The Eagles won the crucial doubles point for the 16
th time out of their 18 matches this season. With each squad earning a 6-3 victory, the Eagles at No. 1 and the 49ers at No. 3, the point came down to a tiebreaker at No. 2. Winthrop came out on top as
Alisa Soloveva and
Tayla Van Eck hung on for a 9-7 win.
-The two squads would trade match wins in singles, with the 49ers pulling even first with a win on court six. The Eagles would go back on top 2-1 as No. 27
Lauren Proctor defeated Charlotte's Tai Martin in a competitive match at No. 1.
-Charlotte knotted things up again at 2-2 with a win on court four, and took its first lead in the match with a close defeat on court five.
-At No. 2,
Alisa Soloveva appeared to be in trouble in the first set, trailing 0-4, then 2-5. The sophomore battled all the way back, winning five-straight games for a 7-5 set win. Soloveva rode the momentum into the second set for a 6-0 win and tied the match at 3-3.
-With the match in the balance, the decision would come down to the third set result at court three between
Megan Kauffman and Charlotte's Alexandra Lee. Kauffman found herself down 3-5 in the set, but saved multiple match points to even the set at 5-5. Each player held serve to move to 6-6 and headed for a set tiebreak. Kauffman delivered the 7-3 tiebreak win to secure the team victory.

Alisa Soloveva (15-2) each boast double-digit singles victories at the top of the league, with Soloveva's winning percentage (.882) leading the Big South Conference. Proctor is undefeated in conference play and has won all but one of her league matches in straight-sets, while Soloveva has also won each of her conference matches without dropping a set.

Megan Kauffman remained undefeated and improved to a league-best 16-0 with their 6-3 doubles victory on court one.
-Kauffman secured team victory with a third-set victory, just her fourth match of the season that has gone to three sets or a third-set tiebreaker. She is 3-1 in those matches.

Winthrop will host its final Big South Conference match of the regular season on Sat., Apr. 7 at Rock Hill Tennis Center against Charleston Southern at 10 a.m. A win would clinch the regular season conference title for the Eagles.
