Men's Tennis Remains Undefeated In Big South With 6-1 Win At Radford

Best start to league play since 2015 squad started 4-0.

RADFORD, Va. – Winthrop men's tennis (9-6, 5-0 Big South) won its fifth-consecutive match and remained undefeated in conference play with a 6-1 road win at Radford (8-10, 0-7 Big South) Tuesday afternoon. The streak marks the best start to league play since the 2015 squad went 4-0 to start conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Eagles won the doubles point for the eighth time this season, sweeping all three courts for just the third time.

-Sophomore Connor Williamson led off the Eagles in singles play with his third-consecutive singles win, all coming in straight-sets, for a 2-0 lead.

-Senior Tremayne Mitchell continued his winning streak with his ninth victory in a row to extend the lead to 3-0. Mitchell has won four out of his past five matches in straight sets.

-The clinching point would come from the other senior in Joshua Ryan, who, playing up a court to No. 5, would deliver the straight-set knockout punch the Eagles needed. Ryan battled back from down 4-5 in the first set to take it 7-5, then completed the deciding win with a dominant 6-2 second set.

-The Highlanders would get on the board with a win on court three, but Winthrop would finish strong with a third-set tiebreak win by Diego Quiroz at No. 1 and a three-set victory by Aditya Gokhale at No. 6 for the 6-1 victory.

NOTABLES
-Tremayne Mitchell won his ninth-straight singles match, his team-leading 12th singles victory on the season, which is a new career-high for the senior.

-Gabriel Dias and Joshua Ryan completed the doubles sweep with a 6-4 win, improving their undefeated record to 9-0 on the year, the best record in the league at the No. 3 court.

-Since dropping a tough 6-0 loss to Ga. Southern on Feb. 25, Winthrop has won eight of nine matches over the past month, including its 5-0 start to Big South play. The win improved Winthrop's road record to 5-4 on the season.
